Irregular, painful periods are normal in adoloscents. If periods are scanty, irregular, painful associated with weight gain, mood swings consult a gynecologist who will ask for USG abdomen, blood tests. This may be a case of PCOD.

How To Correct Foot Deformities in Children?

DNB (Pediatrics), MBBS
Pediatrician, Ghaziabad
How To Correct Foot Deformities in Children?

As babies develop in the mother's womb, there can be many factors, which could hamper normal growth in the embryo. These can result in deformities within the physiology of the baby. One area is bone tissue growth, which in early stages is still cartilage, and can manifest within the baby as deformed feet.

The incidence of deformed feet in infants, although not very common, is still prevalent enough to warrant certain fields of study as to why they happen and their remedies.

Reasons for foot deformities in infants

Some of the reasons for foot deformities within infants are mentioned below:

1. Genetic or hereditary problems - Some problems are passed from one generation to the other, although it may not manifest in the older generations.

2. Infections to the mother during pregnancy - If the mother contracted a disease during pregnancy or had an infection, it can have adverse effects on the developments of the baby and cause deformities.

3. Side effects of medications - If the mother was under medication, side effects of certain medications can cause hormonal imbalances resulting in deformities.

4. Hormonal imbalances - Certain hormonal imbalances present in the mother's body due to overlooked problems may cause issues with the baby's development and result in foot or other physical deformities.

Correction of Foot Deformities

Most corrective measures for foot deformities entail surgery as severe problems can be only corrected through that. These measures may also include other methods such as physiotherapy, massages, and training.

Let's look at some of the techniques, which are used to correct deformities, either in combinations or as standalone techniques.

  • Corrective surgery - This is the most common and usually the most recommended course of action as anything above mild deformities will have to be corrected through surgeries. Most surgeries entail lengthy recuperating periods and follow ups.
  • Corrective footwear - Milder foot deformities can be corrected with special footwear or setting devices such as special braces and supports to correct the problems.
  • Physiotherapy - Certain forms of physiotherapy are effective in correcting mild forms of deformities. However, this tool is usually deployed in conjunction with surgeries to speed up the healing process
  • Exercises - Certain deformities can only be changed with the help of exercise over a long period of time and cannot be fixed quickly even via surgery and thus, will need special care for long periods of time.

Acute Upper Respiratory Infection: Causes and Symptoms

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Acute Upper Respiratory Infection: Causes and Symptoms

Upper respiratory infection (URI) is a condition, which involves illness, mainly caused by critical infection in the upper respiratory tract. This region includes the pharynx, larynx, nose and sinus. This infection causes diseases, such as tonsillitis (tonsils get inflamed), pharyngitis (causes sore throat) sinusitis (nasal passage becomes inflamed), laryngitis (voice box in your throat gets inflamed) and common cold.

Causes of upper respiratory infection (URI):

  1. Both virus and bacteria cause upper respiratory infection (URI). The most common form of virus causing this infection is known as 'rhinovirus.'
  2. The immune system of young adults and children are often very vulnerable. Hence, they are more likely to develop upper respiratory tract infection.
  3. URI is also contagious and airborne in nature. So if a person comes in contact with an infected person suffering from URI, he/she is likely to develop this infection.
  4. Not washing hands before meals can also cause upper respiratory infection because the virus can be transferred easily to the mouth and can travel into your system.
  5. If you have any lung problem or heart disease, you are more likely to be susceptible to upper respiratory infection.
  6. Those who already have inflamed tonsils can trigger tonsillitis by drinking any cold or spicy beverage like ice-creams or cold milkshakes.
  7. Exposure to some flu or cold can cause pharyngitis. It can also be caused by second hand smoking.
  8. Birth defects or structural defects in the nasal cavity or nasal polyps can cause sinusitis. Sometimes the inside part of the nose may get swollen due to common cold and block your ducts. This is a common cause for sinusitis.

Symptoms of acute upper respiratory infection:

  1. Congestion in the lungs or nasal area.
  2. Whooping cough
  3. Running nose due to common cold.
  4. Feelings of fatigue and lethargy throughout the day.
  5. Your body will start aching without engaging in any physical exercise.
  6. You can also lose consciousness in severe respiratory tract infections.
  7. Difficulty in breathing.
  8. Oxygen levels in blood drop down drastically.

Sometimes in worse cases, acute upper respiratory tract infection (URI) can also cause respiratory failure, respiratory arrest and congestive heart failure. Therefore, it is necessary to book an appointment with a doctor as soon as you start experiencing the above symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.

Calcium supplementation during pregnancy and lactation: effects on the mother and the fetus.

Calcium consumption is essential for bone development and maintenance throughout life, yet more than one half of the female population in the United States does not consume the recommended amount of calcium. Calcium intake is especially crucial during pregnancy and lactation because of the potential adverse effect on maternal bone health if maternal calcium stores are depleted. There is often a transient lowered bone mineral density and increased rate of bone resorption, with the greatest consequence during the third trimester and throughout lactation. Studies indicate that calcium consumption should be encouraged, especially during pregnancy and lactation, to replace maternal skeletal calcium stores that are depleted during these periods. Because the fetus in utero and the neonate through breast-feeding are dependent on maternal sources for the total calcium load, adequate maternal calcium intake also can affect fetal bone health positively. Proper calcium consumption can be attained through the diet by the consumption of dairy products or leafy greens (such as kale), the consumption of fortified foods, or by supplementation with widely available calcium-containing supplement products. Because many women experience heartburn during pregnancy, calcium-based antacids are ideal for providing heartburn relief, and they offer a calcium supplement to ensure maternal and fetal bone health, without the danger of adverse effects on the neonate.

My son 2 years 4 months old. He is thin and doesn't have good eater. Kindly suggest any good syrup for him.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Faridabad
Basic principle is six meals per day,one large and one small meal. Alternative meals are heavy (3-4fist) size and light (2-3 fist) size. Minimum gap between meals is three hours and no intermediate eating (grasing). Allow your baby to eat himself and give him maximum 20 minutes and withdraw the good. Next meal must be offered 3hours later. No grasing. Most children are anaemic, so any iron syrup 5ml once a day is good enough to stumilate apetite.
