I hope you are not diabetic or having chronic constipation. We must also exclude the possibility of an underlying fistula in ano. In any case, observe proper hygiene, avoid constipation and seek a clinical examination from a general surgeon.

I have skin disease. When I was wear. Tight pants n Jean the are some prob in my legs. So please give my answer as so...
Wearing tight clothes in itself is a reason for fungal infection causing redness, rashes, itching etc. This is because of sweating in your thigh area. You should wear loose cotton clothes. Unhealthy food habits are also reason for it, so you should avoid eating junk foods and outside food. Eat lots of green vegetables, salads, fruits which detoxify your blood. Drink lot of water. Take bath twice a day. Keep yourself clean. You can use niforce soap. Use abzorb powder on the affected area more frequently to keep the area dry. Excellent ayurvedic medicines are available to treat fungal infection and to prevent reccurences. For now start. Vidangatishta 2spoons twice orally with equal quantity of warm water. Neem capsule 2-2 for 6 months avoid eating non vegetarian food for few days. Stop spicy oily n sour food.

Do You Know Excessive Hair Growth in Women is Hirsutism

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Do You Know Excessive Hair Growth in Women is Hirsutism

There are women who feel their looks are spoilt because of the presence of excessive body hair. While hair on women's body is common, excessive body hair isn't a normal condition and must be taken seriously. Women are generally unaware that the condition is known as Hirsutism.

What is Hirsutism?

Hirsutism can be defined as growth of excessive facial and body hair in women. With the world obsessed with flawless skin, such changes from feminine hair pattern (soft, fine, vellus hair) to masculine hair pattern (hard, dark, terminal hair) in a woman is generally unwelcoming and, hence, very distressing for the woman.

Why do some women develop Hirsutism?

In order to understand the reasons for such excessive growth in some women, it is important to understand the differences in the physiology of men and women. The male or female appearance of one's body is dependent on a delicate balance between male and female sex hormones. There is a predominance of the hormone estrogen in a woman's body, whereas androgens (testosterone) are the predominant sex hormones among men. However, some amount of androgens is secreted by the ovaries and adrenal glands (located next to kidneys) in women also. But, an excessive production of these hormones results in Hirsutism. Hormonal imbalance is by far the most common cause of Hirsutism.

Causes of Hirsutism

The common causes of hirsutism include:

1. Endocrine causes

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) - PCOS is a condition of hormonal imbalance in the body, which can result in an irregular menstrual cycle, enlarged ovaries with a cystic appearance on USG, infertility, obesity and hirsutism. For more information on the causes and management of PCOS.
  • Cushing's syndrome - Excessive production of hormone Cortisol by the adrenal glands can lead to symptoms such as high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, skin discoloration, muscle weakness, irregular menstruation, and hirsutism etc. This syndrome is known as Cushing's syndrome.
  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) - CAH is a condition of excessive production of hormones Androgens and Cortisol by the adrenal glands and generally manifests in childhood in the form of virilization. In such cases, CAH can present with symptoms such as ambiguous genitals, obesity, hypertension etc. However, sometimes the manifestation of CAH is deferred to early adulthood and results in milder symptoms, hirsutism being one of them.

2. Tumors - Tumors in ovary or adrenal glands can again cause hirsutism due to excessive production of androgens

3. Medications

  • Long term steroid consumption (commonly used for immunosuppression, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis)
  • Performance enhancing drugs (often used by athletes)

4. Idiopathic - the woman may be having hirsutism despite normal hormone levels

Treatments

There are essentially two lines of treatment for hirsutism - one is medical management and the other is a cosmetic treatment.

Medical treatments for hirsutism -

A. Birth control pills - It's possible to reduce the severity and intensity of hair growth using birth control pills- the most commonly prescribed medical intervention! The birth control pills help by decreasing the production of androgens by ovaries. Besides this, estrogen present in the pills also helps the liver to produce more of sex hormone binding protein- these proteins bind to circulating androgens, thereby reducing their action on the body. Both these actions help in reducing the growth of hair on the body.

B. Anti-androgen medications - There are three categories of anti-androgen medications, which are commonly used for the treatment of hirsutism.

  • I. Spironolactone - Spironolactone is a diuretic medicine, which blocks the effects of androgens on the hair follicles, thus controlling hair growth.
  • II. Finasteride - Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of body testosterone into its more potent chemical entity, thereby limiting the effect of testosterone on hair growth.
  • III. Flutamide - Flutamide is a potent anti-androgen, which blocks the actions of androgens and helps in controlling the hair growth.

However, we have to ensure that the woman is not pregnant when taking any of these three medications. These medicines are often combined with oral contraceptives, which also have a synergistic effect in reducing the severity of hirsutism. One should also seek an expert opinion before starting these medications as there can be serious side effects, especially on liver.

C. Steroids - Low dose dexamethasone can be used to control the overactive adrenal glands when used carefully. However, long-term steroid therapy has got its own side effects and this therapy should only be considered under expert care and guidance.

D. Insulin sensitizing medicines - Medicines such as Metformin and Pioglitazone (Basically these are anti-diabetic medications) help in reducing insulin resistance in the body, which, in turn, helps in controlling the effects of excessive circulating androgens.

Cosmetic treatment for hirsutism -

One very important aspect of cosmetic management of hirsutism is self-care. This can include shaving, waxing, use of depilators and bleaching creams. All these measures help to reduce the amount of visible hair in undesired parts of the body. But, this needs to be done very frequently for a sustained visible effect.

Permanent hair removal is also possible using electrolysis or LASER treatment. In electrolysis treatment, electric current is passed into the hair follicle using a needle, which damages the root of the hair permanently. Similarly, LASER treatment uses LASER to destroy the hair follicle. Both these are effective methods to get rid of the undesired hair. However, we do not yet know if there are any long-term complications or side effects of these methods and these methods are not yet approved by the US FDA.

Psoriasis: Vulnerability to Health Conditions

Psoriasis: Vulnerability to Health Conditions

Psoriasis is the condition in which the infected skin cells multiply 10 times faster than the normal rate. During this disease, the normal skin tends to get covered by a layer of dead skin cells, not allowing the skin to breathe. People who suffer from psoriasis face an increased likelihood of contracting other serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis can erupt just about anywhere on the body, but it most often occurs on the scalp, chest, back, elbows, knuckles, and knees. If you have a mild case, the patches may hardly be noticeable. The worst cases produce unsightly patches almost everywhere.

Psoriasis can also affect fingernails and toenails, making them appear pitted and discolored. It can even cause significant joint pain, a condition known as psoriatic arthritis.

Most people who develop psoriasis are initially diagnosed in their teens, twenties, or thirties. The disease follows a very unpredictable course. That first flare-up may also be the last. Or it may signal the start of a lifetime of flare-ups that come and go for no apparent reason. Fortunately, when the lesions disappear, they leave no scars.

Here's a list of following unsafe health conditions created by psoriasis:

  1. Cancer: People experiencing psoriasis are subjected to an increased risk of contracting certain cancers like lymphoma. A study discovered that people diagnosed with psoriasis have an increased likelihood of 40% to contract cancer than the general population. The reason for this particular risk hasn't been yet understood.
  2. Kidney disease: According to a 2013 study, published in the British Medical journal people with psoriasis have an increased risk of encountering kidney disorders. Severe and mild psoriasis increases the likelihood of kidney diseases by 58% and 36% respectively.
  3. Obesity: People suffering from mild psoriasis are 30% likelier to be obese than those who are not. For people diagnosed with severe psoriasis the chances increase by 80%.
  4. Diabetes and high cholesterol: High levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol and lipoprotein are present in patients with psoriasis, and these patients are 28% likelier to have high cholesterol compared to the general masses. According to a recent study, people with the condition have a 46% increased chance of suffering from Type 2 diabetes.
  5. Peptic ulcers and mood disorders: In some cases, peptic ulcers are also linked with psoriasis. The reason for this is attributed to inflammation. Psoriasis also leads to mood disorders like depression due to the pain and anxiety arising from the condition. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Use this ayurvedic cleanser to get rid of your spots gently without harming your skin: Facial cleansing grains are part of a centuries-old beauty regimen popular in India. This powdered facial cleanser combines natural ingredients to gently exfoliate and remove excess oil and dirt without stripping your skin’s natural beneficial moisture. Just add water and your skin is left clean, smooth, radiant, and glowing. Take 1⁄2 cup almond meal/flour 1⁄2 cup rose petal powder 1 tablespoon turmeric 2 teaspoons orange peel powder 1⁄2 cup chickpea flour (besan) 1⁄2 cup multani mitti (Fuller's earth) 1⁄2 cup brown rice flour 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon To Make: Before you begin, find a protective face mask, or tie a cotton cloth to cover your nose and mouth, to avoid breathing the powders. Carefully place all of the powdered ingredients into the canning jar. You may want to consider sifting the brown rice flour, as there are usually some larger rice grains remaining, which can be a little rough on the skin. Close the lid tightly and shake well to blend to a uniform powder. Let stand for 5 minutes or so, letting the dust settle into the jar. How to Use: To use, simply take out a bit of the powder into the palm of your hand and mix with water added a tiny bit at a time until a paste forms. Then softly cleanse your face using small circular motions. Rinse with warm water and follow with toner and moisturizer. How to store: Store this dry scrub in a spice jar with an airtight cap. Keep the lid tightly closed and store for up to a year. It's good for both facial skin and other parts of your body.

Dark lips are caused by: Smoking Hyper pigmentation due to sunlight ( U/V rays) Lack of Proper Skin Care Allergic reactions are caused by dyes or fragrances in the products Caffeine Please try these tips: Apply a lip balm with sunscreen in it. This will prevent your lips from drying, cracking or changing colour. Cover your face with a scarf when exposed to the sun. Do not bite your lips. Drink plenty of water and eat fruits and vegetables at least 4 servings in a day. Eat sour fruits like lemon and oranges which are rich in Vitamin C. Apply honey overnight and keep it until morning. Do it for 2 weeks and you will notice the softening and change in lip colour. Try applying a mixture of milk cream (malai) with a bit of saffron to your lips.

Rainy Weather Skin Tips

MD, MBBS
Dermatologist, Chennai
Rainy Weather Skin Tips

After a long summer, the first monsoon showers are something everyone looks forward to. After the third shower, this love often abates and the humid, damp weather causes a host of skin infections. Thus, it becomes essential to take extra care of the skin during the rainy season.

Here are a few tips to help your skin maintain its glow:

  • Drink plenty of water: Though the weather is humid, the rainy season can make the skin dehydrated. Thus, it is important to drink plenty of water. This keeps the skin hydrated and avoids the accumulation of toxins in the body. 8 -10 glasses of water a day is the minimum intake required during the rainy season. Lotion based serums and water based moisturizers can also help keep the skin hydrated.
  • Let your skin breathe: During the rainy season, avoid heavy makeup and foundation. Use water based moisturizers instead of oil based moisturizers. Leaving makeup on for too long during this season can enlarge your pores, block them and lead to acne breakouts. If you must use makeup, ensure that it is properly removed at the end of the day.
  • Watch your diet: The condition of your skin mirrors the quality of your diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to keep your skin glowing. Avoid spicy food that can cause erratic blood circulation and lead to allergies and skin irritations.
  • Wash your face frequently: As soon as you get home from a day in the rain, wash your face with lukewarm water. Use a soap free cleanser and a scrub to keep your skin clean. After cleaning your face, use an alcohol free toner to close your pores and balance the pH levels of your skin.
  • Avoid bleaching: Bleaching and facials could do more harm than good in the rainy season. This can make your skin rough.
  • Use sunscreen: Sunscreen protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays. While UVB rays may be blocked by the overcast sky, UVA rays pass through windows and clouds as well. UV radiation not only accelerates signs of skin aging but can also lead to skin cancer. Thus, do not forget to wear sunscreen whether the sky is clear or not.
  • Keep skin dry: As far as possible, keep your skin dry to fight fungal infections. Any place where the skin folds rub against each other is susceptible to such infections. During the rainy season, the feet are most prone of fungal infections. If you've walked through puddles of rainwater, wash your feet as soon as you get home and dry them properly. Also, avoid synthetic clothes that trap moisture and switch to cotton.

With these tips, your skin will be healthy and remain glowing throughout the season.

Follow these methods to get rid from oily face: • Drink 7 -8 glass of water daily. * Apply rose water on your face daily for 5 minutes. * Take proper sleep of 6 to 7 hrs. • Use a face pack of fuller's earth (multani mitti) with rose water one time in a day for seven days. It removes toxins from skin. *To control the oily secretion on face you should maintain your hormonal level. Because imbalance in hormone level causes excessive oil production and causes acne. So do not take stress and do exercise daily such as running, jogging and long breathing exercises. * Avoid to eat high spicy foods.
