I have suffered chronic insomnia for 13 years were I can neither fall asleep or stay asleep without taking sleep medication. I have tried all the natural things of exercise, meditation, quiet time before bed, herbal teas. NOTHING helps. I do not wake up stressed or go to bed stressed but I cannot sleep. I am travelling to Mumbai from Kenya on 12th march and will be in Mumbai for 1 week. I am desperate to find a specialist in this field who can help me. Thank you so much.

Anxiety and depression are two of the most common causes of chronic insomnia. Other common emotional and psychological causes include chronic or significant life stress, anger, worry, grief, bipolar disorder, and trauma. Medical problems or illness. SO you may need antidepresants and anti anxiety medication for a period and can cure insomnia.

I had a 3 seizure attack one 2 year earlier and other 2, one day before. I was not aware of that disease but it's been diagnosed by a doctor, we are in general hospital, What we should do?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry

I hope you have been investigated for the recent seizure attack. If there is no apparent or specific reason for the same, it is probable that you have epilepsy and would need medications for quite a good span of time. I would suggest you to get an EEG and MRI Brain scan done to rule out possible causes of seizures starting at your age. You may consult me online for any further queries or assistance needed

diet: good dietary habits would help an individual maintain good health and offer immunity from recurring bouts of headaches. Consuming cooked vegetables without oil should be encouraged. Have a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Vegetable juices and soup, fruits and fruit juices including apple, mango, should be taken in ample quantities. Highly-fruit based diet for a day or two can relieve pain. Grapes, lemons, cabbage juice are especially important. Rice, salad and buttermilk can always be consumed.

Hi lybrate-user- it could be carpal tunnel syndrome- where a nerve is getting pinched in the wrist producing numbness/ tingling/ weakness in the hand (first three fingers are usually affected). An EMG/ NCS can diagnose appropriately.

I AM 30 Years old I have migraine problem I get sever headache I have done MRC also everything normal please advice for the solution it is also effecting my family life.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello, Self-care measures can help ease the pain of a migraine headache. Try muscle relaxation exercises. Relaxation techniques may include progressive muscle relaxation, meditation or yoga. Get enough sleep, but don't oversleep. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night. It's best to go to bed and wake up at regular times, as well. If possible, rest in a dark, quiet room when you feel a headache coming on. Place an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the back of your neck and apply gentle pressure to painful areas on your scalp. Medication: Take Bakson's Mig Aid tablet/ 1 tablet 3 times a day.

I want an advise for my hand when I drive a cycle or scooty my hand fingers become numb after 5 to 10 minutes drive. ...
This may be happening due to some nerve compression. Pls visit a neurologist to identify which nerve is getting compressed and the cause. In the mean time you can do some wrist exercises like clockwise and anticlockwise rotation.

Epileptic Conditions - How To Deal With Them?

MCh, MBBS, MRCS (UK)

Epileptic Conditions - How To Deal With Them?

Epilepsy is a condition that starts in the brain and causes seizures in which the patient loses consciousness and has convulsions. He also jerks his arms and legs along with trembling and frothing from the mouth.
The lesser known fact about epilepsy is that there are many types of epileptic conditions-over 40 - and similarly, there are numerous drugs available to treat your epileptic disorder and prevent seizures. Your doctor will diagnose your type of epileptic disorder and prepare a treatment plan for it.

Types of epileptic seizures
Epileptic seizures are generally categorized as either partial or primary, generalized depending on where they originate in the brain. Partial seizures are less intense and they start in one section rather than the entire brain. If you have this type of seizure, you will be aware of what’s happening to you. The other type of seizure affects a larger part of the brain. Here you may have difficulty understanding what's happening to you. Since these spread to the entire brain, you lose consciousness and start convulsing.

Having a seizure can put you at risk for serious injuries including head injuries.
So, if you close to you suffers from epilepsy, it's critical to your health and well being to educate yourself about your condition and have an action plan in place to tackle the seizures which can happen anywhere, and sometimes with no one to assist you or him actively.

Here is what you can do to manage epilepsy-

  1. Educate yourself: You must know as much as possible about your condition. Know your symptoms and learn to recognize the symptoms preceding a seizure. Also, educate your friends and family about epilepsy so that they can support you during a seizure. Educate your family to do the right things when you have a seizure.
  2. Make a seizure response plan: This plan should list the names and numbers of your doctors and two emergency contacts.
  3. Other things you can do as an epileptic:
    • Antiepileptic drugs are quite successful in preventing seizures but they should be taken as prescribed. Don’t change your dosage before talking to your doctor.
    • Sleep properly as lack of sleep can trigger seizures.
    • Exercising regularly can help keep you physically healthy and reduce depression and also help in managing seizures.
    • Manage your stress levels, limit alcohol and cigarettes.

On the other hand, if your family member or friend has epilepsy, this is what you can do:

  1. Roll the person onto one side during a seizure.
  2. Place something soft under the person’s head.
  3. Loosen tie and top buttons.
  4. Don’t put an object in an epileptic’s mouth. It can hurt his/her teeth.
  5. Don't try to restrain him during a seizure.
  6. Clear away stones and other dangerous objects if the patient is thrashing around.
  7. Time the seizures and be calm during them.
  8. Don’t leave the patient alone.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
