If your baby is having only cough then you should not worry but if your baby is having fever some difficulty in respiration irritability and if baby is not feeling properly then you should directly go to a pediatrician because in a baby of 6 month old age it is very difficult to tell whether baby is having simple cold and cough or having early pneumonia if your babies playing feeling well having normal day to day activities then you should wait for 2 or 3 days and no much medicines are required you can continue with this medicine for one or two days if baby is fine.

Is biscuit to be given to small baby? After which age biscuit is good for small baby?
Buscuits contain refined flour (maida) which is not good for children. It causes stomanch pain and colic and indigestion in babies. It is best to give them these things after 2 years of age. Also in limited quantities.

Afrezza (Insulin Inhalation)

MBBS,CCA,DCA,AASECT,FPA,AAD,F.H.R.SM.I.M.S
General Physician, Gorakhpur
Afrezza (Insulin Inhalation)

Afrezza - the only inhaled insulin for diabetes.

Afrezza® is an inhaled human insulin indicated to help improve glycemic control in adults with diabetes mellitus.

Afrezza is a rapid-acting, inhaled insulin used to control high blood sugar in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The product consists of a dry formulation of human insulin delivered from a small and portable inhaler.

Administered at the beginning of a meal, afrezza dissolves rapidly upon inhalation to the lung and delivers insulin quickly to the bloodstream. Peak insulin levels are achieved within 12–15 minutes of administration. Afrezza is available in 4-unit and 8-unit single dose cartridges of insulin powder that can be used, as prescribed by a health care professional, in combination with other diabetes medications to achieve target blood sugar levels. For afrezza doses exceeding 8 units, patients may use a combination of 4 unit and 8 unit cartridges. Other sizes of cartridges are being considered. The disposable inhaler can be used for up to 15 days, should be kept in a clean, dry place with the mouthpiece cover on and may be wiped with a clean, dry cloth if needed.

Limitations of use

Do not use afrezza as a substitute for long-acting insulin;

Afrezza must be used in combination with long-acting insulin in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Do not use afrezza to treat diabetic ketoacidosis. Afrezza is not recommended in patients who smoke or who have recently stopped smoking.

Important safety information for afrezza

Warning: risk of acute bronchospasm in patients with chronic lung disease

Acute bronchospasm has been observed in patients with asthma and COPD using afrezza. Afrezza is contraindicated in patients with chronic lung disease such as asthma or copd. Before initiating afrezza, perform a detailed medical history, physical examination, and spirometry (FEV1) to identify potential lung disease in all patients.

Do not use afrezza if you have problems with your lungs, such as asthma or COPD. Do not use afrezza during a low blood sugar reaction (hypoglycemia). If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in afrezza, do not use afrezza as this may cause a significant and severe allergic reaction.

Hello, I want to know which vaccination is better for my baby painful or painless. Regards.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

Hello, I want to know which vaccination is better for my baby painful or painless. Regards.
The painless vaccine has currently lost favour in view of the increasing number of children detected to have got the disease inspite of vaccination. The efficacy and duration of effectiveness is lesser . Hence these days it is advocated to use the painful vaccine, unless the child had had very severe side effects earlier, or has a history of fever induced convulsions.

My baby is 13 month old and recently we have started offering cow's milk to him. From that day onwards he passes pale yellow coloured runny poo 6,7 times in a day. How to overcome this? Also kindly suggest, can I reuse the boiled milk?

Yes you can reuse the boiled milk. Also, it is normal for a baby to poop frequently when a different source of milk is provided. My advice to you is to keep the quantity low as baby takes time to accustom to new habits.

You should give your baby only breast milk or iron-fortified formula during the first 12 months of life, not cow's milk. Starting at age 6 months, you may add solid foods to your baby's diet. Cow milk is not suitable for human child and should not be given before 1years of life.

My nephew is 5 years old. He is able to read well but reluctant to write. He is not willing to write at all. What can be the reason for this and how do we make him write.

B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition, Nutrition Certification,Registered Dietitian

It is natural for a kid to have more inclination towards one activity while lack of interest in others. I suggest you to indulge him in some activities that are fun and also pull him for writing, even if it casual. There are many fun toys and games available in the market that might interest him. Also you can reward him with some treats for writing.

Hello, My son of 3 years old keeps falling ill twice a month And runs high fever so every time doctor suggest a course of antibiotic. Like azithral cefixime and zenflox. We recently did his cbc, ultrasound of abdomen, urin test and everything comes normal. Is taking so many medicines safe. Are there any health concerns in the long run. Should we introduce pediasure or any supplement.

You have not mentioned range and duration of temp. Fever twice in a month relapse after a fortnight which may be due interrupted treatment for a definite cause of fever as various antibiotics used may not have been for sufficient time. Antibiotics are not safe if used unnecessary. I suggest, next time, to maintain temperature chart of 4 time for three to four days without medicine. If temp is > 101 degree f, give him 10 ml paracetamol. You may get back after that. House hold foods are better than pedisure.

My daughter is 4 years old she often complains about stomach ache and pain in d legs we have consulted 2 to 3 doctors but she still complains about stomach ache sometimes I want to know which medicine aur syrup can be given for immediate relief. And what is the permanent solution for it.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
I suppose, her stomach ache is for short duration without any other symptom. Such type of pain is non specific and gets relieved on its own and usually no medicine is effective. It gets cure after passage of time. Medicine takes some time to act, by the time pain is relieved, credit goes to medicine while it subsided on its own. Therefore, I do not advise any medicine except to explain as now. Some time periodical deworming once in 2 to 3 months may help.

My 15 month old son is constipated. We gave him an oral laxative, still he is not passing stools. It has been the case since a month. Please advise.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Faridabad
Stop bottle feed and give him high fibre food. To treat constipation laxatives have to be given for at least three months with changes in diet. Most of the time such babies have pain while passing stools. They may be having fissure in ano that is wound at the anus, local anesthetic agent may be added and luke warm water wash of the anal region may be done to relieve of pain.

Diarrhea - How to Treat it in Children?

M.Ch - Paediatric Surgery, MNAMS (Membership of the National Academy) (General Surgery) , DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Pediatrician, Pune
Diarrhea - How to Treat it in Children?

Diarrhea occurs when the body is expelling germs out of it. An episode of diarrhea can last anywhere from a couple of days to a week. Dehydration, cramps, vomiting, nausea and fever often accompany diarrhea. Usually, children tend to get diarrhoea more than adults.

Diarrhea treatment according to causes behind it

  1. Treating diarrhea due to infection: Some common causes of diarrhea include infection from rotavirus, salmonella (a type of bacteria) and rarely giardia (a type of parasite). In children, virus is a common cause of diarrhea. Besides watery or loose stools, viral gastroenteritis infection symptoms include fever, headache, stomach ache and vomiting. Gastroenteritis diarrhoea can last for 5-14 days. During this time, fluid loss must be prevented. In younger children, oral rehydration solution (ORS) or breast milk is enough. Just feeding them water won’t replenish the potassium, sodium and other nutrients they lose. Older children, to prevent fluid loss, can be given ORS and popsicles to counter dehydration and vomiting.
  2. Treating diarrhea due to medications: Antibiotics or laxatives can cause diarrhea in children. If the diarrhea is mild, make sure your child is hydrated. If the antibiotics are causing diarrhoea, you need to continue medication, but do consult a doctor immediately.
  3. Treating diarrhea due to food poisoning: When it comes to food poisoning induced diarrhea, the same method as countering infection-induced diarrhea should be followed. Keep your child hydrated and call your doctor.

Diarrhea and children - recognising dehydration

The most serious complication of diarrhea is dehydration, especially if the diarrhea is severe. Severe dehydration is critical as it can cause brain damage, seizure, even death. Your child may need immediate medical attention, if you notice the following symptoms:

  1. Light-headedness and dizziness
  2. Sticky, dark mouth
  3. Dark yellow urine
  4. No or few tears when crying
  5. Dry, cool skin
  6. Loss of energy

When should you visit a doctor

Diarrhea resolves within a few days, but it can have serious complications. Call your doctor if you notice signs such as:
1. Looks very sick
2. Diarrhea has persisted for more than 3 days
3. Your child is less than 6 months old
4. Your child is vomiting bloody yellow or green fluid
5. Seems dehydrated
6. The fever reads above 105 degree Fahrenheit
7. Bloody stools
8. Rashes
9. Stomach pain persists for more than 2 hours
10. Infrequent urination

My son is 9 years old. He has a bed wetting problem almost since birth. Otherwise he is fit and healthy. Recently we did the urine culture test but it is negative. We also did sonography and mcu test and both test reports are normal. What shall we do?

Pediatrician, Pune
Don't make him feel bad about his passage of urine, he can strengthen his urinary sphincter by trying to control his urine during day time, avoid drinking of water after 7 pm, make him pass urine before going to bed, reward him for his dry nights.
