Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Symptoms and Management

Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Symptoms and Management

The human body with its multiple organs is a highly complicated structure and one or more organs often malfunction for various reasons. However, for some, no reasons are identified for this problem. One such is irritable bowel syndrome or IBS as it is commonly referred to.

It is a common disorder affecting the large intestine leading to alternate bouts of diarrhea and constipation, abdominal cramps and a feeling of fullness. It is common in people younger than 45 years of age, affects women more than men, and though the exact reason is not known, the following are attributed.

Physical/Physiologic reasons:

1. Signal issues between the brain and intestines: For various or even unknown reasons, the brain may not be able to send the right signal to the stomach to process food, making the stomach to be hyperactive and have an increased sense of pain or sensitivity or discomfort. Neurotransmitters, which are chemicals responsible for sending signals to various organs also could be involved.

2. Hormonal connection: Menstrual periods tend to aggravate symptoms of IBS, while postmenopausal women are largely free of IBS symptoms.

3. Genetics: People with a family history of IBS are more likely to develop IBS too.

4. Aggravating foods: Foods rich in carbohydrates, spicy foods, fatty foods, caffeine and alcohol aggravate IBS symptoms. Ability to absorb sugar could be a cause too.

5. Infections: Some people with IBS have certain bacteria identified in their gut which produces excessive gas and this could lead to altered bowel movements.

6. GI Motility Issues: Alterations in the way the food passes through the stomach can lead to either constipation (slow movement) or diarrhea (quicker movement). There could also be spasms and contractions after eating, especially if the stress levels are high.

7. Psychological issues: Panic disorder, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are common in IBS patients. It is possible that they are not able to express their psychological stress, it manifests as physical symptoms. Stress increases symptoms of IBS and vice versa.

Management:

1. Manage stress: Meditation, yoga, support groups, medication and even hypnosis in severely stressed people helps control stress, providing great relief in IBS symptoms.

2. Lifestyle changes: Reduce alcohol and smoking

3. Dietary changes: Avoid aggravating foods, increase the amount of fiber if you have diarrhea and space out meals to avoid intestinal overload

4. Herbal remedies: Probiotics, peppermint oil and a variety of herbal medicines are available.

5. Symptomatic medications: Based on presenting symptoms, different medications including antibiotics for infections and motility drugs can be used. Anti anxiety and antidepressants are also prescribed to manage the psychological issues.

In terms of causes, symptoms, or treatment, IBS requires a very individualized approach and your doctor is the right person to discuss this with and decide. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gastroenterologist.

I am suffering from a stomach pain since past 3 days. There is constipation and gas too, what can I do?

I am suffering from a stomach pain since past 3 days. There is constipation and gas too, what can I do?
Constipation is a condition of the digestive system where the sufferer has hard feces that are difficult to expel. In most cases, this occurs because the colon has absorbed too much of the water from the food that is in the colon. The slower the food moves through your digestive tract, the more water the colon will absorb from food. Consequently, the feces become dry and hard. Defecation (emptying the bowels) can become very painful, and in some serious cases there may be symptoms of bowel obstruction. When the constipation is very severe; when the constipation prevents the passage of feces and gas, it is called obstipation. 1. Take 10 ml of lemon juice (nimboo ka rass) and add 200ml of water to it with one teaspoon full sugar and drink it twice a day. 2. Eat old jaggery (guda) 4-5 gm daily. 3. Consume fig (anjeer) with luke warm lik at night. 4. Drink glass full of milk with 5-10 ml of ghee at night. 5. Consume grape juice 10-20ml twice a day. Take triphala powder 3-6 gm with luke warm water at night. 6. Drink 10-15 glasses of water in a day and add salad in your diet.

Never skip breakfast Have a balanced diet Exercise Drink more water Don’t be stressed Cut down the vices Surround yourself with cheerful people 1 Brown Rice Rich in manganese, the mineral that helps produce energy from protein and carbs, it will help you maintain high energy all day. A versatile ingredient, brown rice can be served as a side dish with your favorite lean proteins (along with nutrient-packed veggies!) for a powerhouse lunch or dinner. 2.Sweet Potato High in carbohydrates and loaded with beta-carotene (vitamin A) and vitamin C, these will help fight off midday fatigue. Bonus: Kids will love this sweet treat at mealtime. Try them mashed or cut into strips, tossed with a little oil and and baked for a healthier alternative to french fries. 3 Honey A spoonful of honey is nature's equivalent of an energy drink. Low on the glycemic index, this natural sweetener acts as a time-released muscle fuel during exercise and helps replenish muscles post-workout. Add a sweet drizzle to anything from breakfast yogurt to afternoon tea. 4.Bananas Because they are composed mostly of sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fiber, bananas are a foolproof energy food. Top them with peanut or almond butter for a well-rounded snack, or slice one into your morning cereal for an extra boost that will keep you going until lunchtime. 5.apples Not only will an apple a day keep the doctor away, it'll also give you a powerful jolt of energy. High in fiber, apples take longer to digest, so they'll give you a more prolonged lift than many other fruit picks. Snack on apples with cheese for an especially effective pick-me-up. 6 Oranges High in vitamin C, potassium and folate, this citrus fruit rations out energy steadily over time instead of giving you a quick sugar rush. Peel and eat an orange whole to benefit from the pectin and fiber in the fruit's membranes. 7 Spinach An excellent source of iron, a key component of energy production in the body. Eat a spinach salad for lunch and you probably won't experience that afternoon energy slump. 8 Beans Both a protein and a complex carb, they're a must for both carnivores and vegetarians. Toss a cup into of a spinach salad or enjoy a bean burrito. 9 Almonds Packed with protein, manganese, copper and riboflavin, almonds are a handy snack to keep at your desk or in your bag. Copper and manganese play an essential role in keeping energy flowing throughout the body by neutralizing toxins within cells. Riboflavin aids oxygen-based energy production. 10 Salmon Salmon has been receiving a lot of hype lately for its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease. But this pink fish also contains protein and vitamin B6, niacin and riboflavin—all of which help convert the food you eat into energy. Top a spinach salad with salmon, or serve it with a side of brown rice and veggies for a power-packed lunch or dinner.

I am 35 year I am suffering from ulcerative colitis since last 2 year. What should I do?

Alternative Medicine Specialist, Bhubaneswar
Hi, chronic constipation is often the lead cause behind ulcerative colitis. You definitely do need to streamline your diet which should mostly comprise of softly cooked or steamed vegetables with less of oil, ghee, spices et al. The more bland the diet is, easily digestible will it be and the better it will be for your health/ recovery. Also, do consume well ripened fruits especially papaya & banana. Buttermilk and coconut water too are immensely valuable in this condition. Take plenty of water daily, and ensure that you get enough of bed rest, avoiding stress/ strain/ anxieties. Also, take care not to strain while passing stools. A light abdominal massage on a regular basis also helps. You may connect with me in private to discuss and come up with a treatment plan that suits you in particular.

Vinod weight is very low though he eat too much And his digestive system is good, so what can he do?

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Vinod weight is very low though he eat too much And his digestive system is good, so what can he do?
Hello, according to ayurveda weight gain not only depends upon heavy diet but also on other factors like proper digestion, sound sleep, and mental relaxation. Your excess diet/protein powder is not being digested and hence major of its portion is being wasted as excreta. Try these modifications for weight gain- a) Avoid fast food and spicy diet. B) Avoid late night sessions. C) Wakeup early before 6: 30 and perform yogasana like pawan muktasana and slight running schedule. D) Increase sweets and dairy products in your diet. E) Try to sleep at least eight hours a day.

Hi lybrate-user - incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet while eliminating unhealthy foods. - if you are working or studying away from home, try to pack healthy lunch and snacks for yourself to avoid eating unhealthy food daily. - don't eat straight from the packet - use a plate or bowl to control how much you eat. - don't delay or skip meals. - cut down your consumption of aerated drinks and sodas. - drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. Drink water after waking up and before sleeping. Being dehydrated may make you feel like you're hungry, so it is important to stay hydrated. - have homemade fruit and vegetable juices - eat 5-6 small healthy meals every 2-3 hours, every day, instead of having a few big ones. This regulates your blood sugar level and your metabolism. - don't skip breakfast, instead, make it rich with complex carbohydrates and proteins, so it can provide you with energy to get through the day. Try to include the following as your morning breakfast, oats porridge, eggs on multigrain toast or daliya with sprouts. - avoid artificial sweeteners in processed foods. - eat slowly as it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register if you're full or not. Eating too fast leads to overeating, so chew slowly to digest your food better and control how much you eat. - use a smaller plate to control your portion sizes and avoid overeating. - know your cravings and do not snack when you're emotional. It is said that you crave crunchy and savory food when you're stressed, frustrated or lonely. Figure out what you crave and replace them with healthier alternatives. - do not eat mindlessly; concentrate on your food instead of watching tv or playing with your phone to avoid overeating.
