I would like to know whether glucometer reading is accurate or manual testing is ok recently I tested my blood sugar in glucometer it showed 190 where as in manual testing it showed 240 which reading is correct I am using glucocard vital please help.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

I would like to know whether glucometer reading is accurate or manual testing is ok recently I tested my blood sugar...
glucometer reading shows sugar in the capillary blood, which is invariably about 11% higher than the sugar level in venous blood, particularly when after food blood sugar is tested the difference is more visible. Now a days most glucometers are calibrated to show readings as in the venous blood. Therefore regular monitoring of blood sugars at home glucometers are quite good.

If fasting and PP blood sugar is normal with Hb1Ac -7, do I need treatment or dietary control is enough.

Your hba1c is in a diabetic range. For non diabetic it should be less than 5.7. For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in fat and high in fibre. Walking for 30 mins a day for at least 5 days in a week is recommended. Follow a stress free life. After doing this for around 2-3 months recheck your hba1c, fbs and ppbs.

Hello, No one should take medicines past expiry. Just like you will not consume food past expiry. Two things may happen - either the drug becomes ineffective and will not work, or the drug changes into something more toxic and may cause harm. I hope this answer has helped you Thank you.

I' m diabetic. I take 50 unit insulin twice daily. Please some suggestions for me.
Dear , you are only 19 yrs old so you must be having type 1 dm, not diabetes insipidus. Now it is necessary to know fbs, ppbs, and hba1c. I also want to know the type of insulin and proper dose at proper time. Now you are taking insulin, so you should use glucometer at home and check sugar at interval, like fasting in the morning, post lunch, post dinner etc and keep record and inform your physician, so dise can be adjusted.

Hi Doc, If I turn vegan, from where do I get daily requirements of protein and minerals needed for healthy body. Isn't it better to have all types of food instead of adapting a vegan lifestyle and do some sort of physical exercise daily. Mr. Lybrate-user, being a vegetarian is by ones own choice. Vegetarian diet also does provide all the necessary nutrients and proteins, when proper food selection is made. Whole grain foods, multiple grains usage, use of pulses in good quantity, use of soy beans and peanuts, chanas, etc. Does give good proteins. Milk and dahi, gives a good variety of proteins. Green leafy vegetables, multicloured vegetables, fruits and berries, dry fruits offer almost all needed nutrients. Vegetarian diet is good, advantageous but if you want to shift to other foods, there is no barrier. It always by choice. Thanks.
