All About Alzheimer's Disease!

All About Alzheimer's Disease!

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological, irreversible, progressive brain disorder. It is a chronic neurodegenerative dementia that causes the death of brain cells, causing memory loss and cognitive decline. It affects a person’s thinking and behavior. The symptoms develop slowly and get worse as time passes.

Causes:
As it is a kind of dementia, Alzheimer’s is caused by the death of brain cells. Over a course of time, brain cells die progressively and at the end, the tissue is left with fewer nerve cells and connections. As a result, the total brain size shrinks. Tiny inclusions called plaques and tangles can be seen in the postmortem. These cannot be seen or tested in a living Alzheimer’s affected brain. These plaques are given the name “amyloid plaques” because they are found among the dying cells of the brain when a protein called beta-amyloid builds. The tangles stay in the neurons; they are formed from a protein called tau.

There are several reasons behind all this, some of which are listed below-

  1. Anti-anxiety medications
  2. Hitting on the head too many times
  3. Regularly sleep-deprived
  4. Loneliness
  5. Diabetes in the brain
  6. Old age
  7. Genetic line
  8. Down’s syndrome
  9. Cardiovascular diseases

Symptoms:
Alzheimer’s disease damages the brain, so the clinical signs and symptoms begin to show very early. The symptoms are-

  1. Memory loss
  2. Agitation and mood swings
  3. Poor judgment
  4. The trouble with money calculations
  5. Difficulty doing familiar tasks
  6. Trouble in planning or solving a problem
  7. Confusion with time and place
  8. Difficulty in communicating
  9. Loss of motivation
  10. Inappropriate behavior
  11. Aggressive personality
  12. Childlike behavior

Preventing Alzheimer’s disease:
Alzheimer’s disease ultimately results in death. Even if there are treatments, they cannot fully cure it. So it’s better to try to prevent it before it happens. Ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease are-

  1. Eating more fruits and vegetables.
  2. Eating berries every day.
  3. Increasing omega-3 fatty acids.
  4. Taking folic acid supplements.
  5. Drinking grape juice or red wine with evening meal.
  6. Doing the Mediterranean style diet.
  7. Controlling the blood pressure.
  8. Having strong social support.

Treatment of Alzheimer’s disease:

  1. Treatment of Alzheimer’s disease is a long time process.
  2. First of all, doctors perform a physical exam to check the overall neurological health. By this, they check muscle strength, reflexes, walking ability, sense of sight and hearing, coordination and balance.
  3. Then comes the blood test to find the cause of confusion and memory loss by checking the thyroid disorder and vitamin deficiency.
  4. Then they perform the neuropsychological test and check the mental status.
  5. Then there are other tests, like MRI, CT, and PET.
  6. After all this, drugs are given and a safe and supportive environment is created with proper exercise and nutrition.

Alzheimer’s disease is undoubtedly the worst kind of disease. Hence, it is highly recommended to contact a doctor as soon as any symptom is noticed.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The values mentioned are fairly normal. TGL 200 mg is not really a problem at all. If the levels go above 300 to 400 mg or more, then you need to worry about. Your weight appears to be a bit more than what it should be considering the age. About 50 kgs is fine. So please work towards reducing it. That will improve TGL levels. There is no mention about blood glucose levels or HbA1c%, so no idea how well is diabetes controlled. Thanks.

Good morning I have been suffering from depression since last 15 days thinking about a girl. I am unable to come out of her thoughts please suggest me what to do.

Good morning I have been suffering from depression since last 15 days thinking about a girl. I am unable to come out ...
It looks like you are pining for her after the break up. Have you analyzed why you two had this fallout? If it your fault, then apologize and see if she is amenable. If not you may have done something quite unforgivable. Boy/girl relationship is very intense, and the very thing that makes it attractive (the opposite sex and all its nuances), can also be its nemesis. You must learn what that difference was about your past relations and this particular one and find out how to live with a love relationship. There must be love, respect, commitment, honesty, trust, and freedom in the romantic scene. If however, this is final, then remove all associations of hers: gifts, notes, letters, cards, emails, and any reminders to get her out of your system, not mind. Keep the good memories but don’t indulge in them. Get back to your old pals and revive those contacts. Normally when we get a girl friend, we drop all our friends and live exclusively with her. This is not a good thing to do, generally. So do get back to them and get into good social circles. They will help you get over her. Do not talk ill or malign your ex to your friends, whatever was the reason. That is unfortunately a very bad habit many of us have – we must still respect her reputation and treat her with dignity. Since this break up is so serious for you that you are depressed, do meet up with a counselor and talk about your feelings, openly. This is not the end of the world and she is not the only girl in life. You will find another but learn not to repeat the mistakes that led to the breakup. This time choose wisely and behave like a true gentleman.

I have acne on my forehead, cheeks and chin. Sometimes, I get cystic acne too. My skin is oily, so I wash my face with Clean & Clear morning energy face wash (2-3 times) a day. I used Fash face wash and Retino-A as per a dermatologist's suggestion but it didn't help me. Then I used Azythromycin 500 mg tablets along with Retino AC cream on my cystic acne but it darkens the acne spot causing dryness. I also have dandruff, for which I'm currently taking treatment. And on my cheeks, the pores are sometimes large. I use Vicco Turmeric cream and Multani Mitti, turmeric, sandalwood paste to control the appearance of acne but nothing helps much. Any suggestions? I am 25 years old and a little desperate to get rid of my acne. Please Help.

MD - Dermatology, MBBS
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Hi. Cystic acne requires oral tablets for longer periods to get it under control. Please be in touch with your dermatologist regularly to keep your acne under check. Since acne is hormonal it may bother you repeatedly but getting it treated adequately every time is important or else they will leave bad marks and scars. Ideally acne creams are to be applied just one drop for the entire face at night with gentle spreading and no massage. If some creams give you unmanageable dryness or irritation, let your doctor know.
