Constipation is a condition of the digestive system where the sufferer has hard feces that are difficult to expel. In most cases, this occurs because the colon has absorbed too much of the water from the food that is in the colon. The slower the food moves through your digestive tract, the more water the colon will absorb from food. Consequently, the feces become dry and hard. Defecation (emptying the bowels) can become very painful, and in some serious cases there may be symptoms of bowel obstruction. When the constipation is very severe; when the constipation prevents the passage of feces and gas, it is called obstipation. 1. Take 10 ml of lemon juice (nimboo ka rass) and add 200ml of water to it with one teaspoon full sugar and drink it twice a day. 2. Eat old jaggery (guda) 4-5 gm daily. 3. Consume fig (anjeer) with luke warm lik at night. 4. Drink glass full of milk with 5-10 ml of ghee at night. 5. Consume grape juice 10-20ml twice a day. Take triphala powder 3-6 gm with luke warm water at night. 6. Drink 10-15 glasses of water daily and salad in your diet.

Managing Hypertension During Pregnancy

Managing Hypertension During Pregnancy

Have you given birth to a newborn of late? Or, are you expecting to be a new mother in a couple of months? Whatever the trigger you surely know how motherhood brings about a huge lot of changes within and without. Motherhood, as a gratifying experience gradually works on our view of the world. It significantly shapes perspectives of people closely related to us. Such changes are internal and go way deeper in deciding the kind of parenthood you are ready for. The more obvious changes are however not satisfying. Many women find it strenuous to accept how their body changes every passing week. There are other disadvantageous health issues an expecting woman is known to face. From headaches, to hormonal imbalances, to back pain and fatigue; they face it all. Reportedly, the most prevalent yet distressing problem among pregnant women is that of hypertension. Causal factors leading to hypertension could be many; it is necessary to get diagnosed before your condition is too acute to tackle.

How can you regulate hypertension to keep healthy while pregnant:

  1. Addiction is a complete no-no: If you are addicted to smoking or drinking, you should stop immediately. Your bad habits can increase your blood pressure by a high percentage. You must also abstain from taking other banned drugs.
  2. Obesity is a major concern: Some people think obesity to be a sign of health during pregnancy. It is important to be strong and healthy, but excess of adipose tissues is really not required. Obesity can also lead to miscarriages. Even if you feel like binge eating, stick to a nutritious diet and avoid irregular food habits. The kind of food you take also determines your blood flow. It is better to eat food that has a low level of sodium.
  3. Indulge in physical activities: Routine workouts and moderate household activities that do not involve exertion must be done by all pregnant women. Exercise helps in circulating blood properly. It effectively betters your condition of hypertension. Consult a healthcare provider for good advice.
  4. Twins or triplets: If you are carrying more than one baby, you are at a higher risk of suffering from hypertension as your body is making adjustments to added stress. In such a case one needs to take medications to control blood pressure following the advice of a doctor.
  5. If you are above forty: Pregnant women over the age of forty are more likely to develop one of the four kinds of hypertension typically faced during childbearing. Since, at this age your body has already started degenerating you might be lacking in vitamins. Vitamin supplements, especially the intake of enough folic acid is strongly recommended.

Ways To Quit Smoking!

DNB (Respiratory disease), Fellowship Bronchoscopy, MBBS
Pulmonologist, Ahmedabad
Ways To Quit Smoking!

As a pulmonologist, I see patients with breathing problems on a daily basis. Too often do I hear patients express regret about not quitting smoking earlier. The truth of the matter is that it is never too late! quitting smoking is more important than any medicine a doctor can prescribe in preventing long term health problems. So I encourage all my patients who smoke to try every day to cut back and eventually quit smoking.

Patient who smoke need to be ready to quit smoking. If you are not ready to quit smoking, you should think spend a minute every day thinking about the reason why quitting smoking is a good idea. Once you are ready, you should talk to your doctor about ways to help you quit. Even if you don’t ask, your doctor may ask about ways to help you quit smoking. Just talking about how to quit smoking is more important that a prescription pad, and there is no quick fix to quitting. Although there are medicines than can help people quit, making a plan is the critical first step.

Nicotine is a powerful drug, more addictive than any drug that can be bought illegally. The nicotine found in cigarettes takes between 7-10 seconds to reach the brain. The thousands of other chemicals in cigarettes are just along for the ride, and they are more toxic than anything you can imagine putting in your body. Most people remember their first cigarette, which was probably bad experience. But the nicotine keeps people coming back for more, even though the adverse effects are obvious to even a first time smoker.

Once you are ready to quit, remember a few things:

  1. Set a date. The first of the month, someone’s birthday, or the day after a particularly stressful week. Try your best to stick to that date.
  2. Get rid of all the matches, lighters, ashtrays, and that last cigarette you have around.
  3. Tell your family and friends you are going to give it a shot. Get their support!
  4. If you slip, don’t worry, there is always tomorrow. Give it another chance!

Finally, using a medicine that replaces the nicotine, like the nicoderm patch, nicotine gum, or nicotine lozenges, replaces the only thing in the cigarettes that your brain is addicted to. Once you have gotten over those urges, the chances of giving the cigarettes up for good increases 3-fold! using another medicine, like chantix or buproprion, can increase the chances of quitting even more, just ask your doctor.

Thanks for reading, and good luck!

May I know what to take good diet after delivery to be healthy and what food not to take,

May I know what to take good diet after delivery to be healthy and what food not to take,
Hi lybrate-user after your delivery it is natural for you to focus all your attention on your newborn baby. But try to look after yourself as well by paying attention to your diet. Eating right can go a long way in helping you get back your strength and energy. After all, your baby needs a strong and healthy mum. And if you are breastfeeding, what you eat passes on to your baby through your milk. So all the more reason to eat well! your family and friends may have a lot of well-meaning advice about the foods you should have while you recover from the delivery. Traditionally, during confinement, women have been given high-calorie food like full cream milk, butter, ghee, dried fruits and sugar. While you do need extra calories if you are breastfeeding, you can get the vital nutrients in a way that doesn't necessarily mean piling on fat as well. We have rounded up a few foods traditionally given during confinement that are rich in minerals and vitamins that you need to recover from childbirth. Read on to find out what traditional confinement ingredients are particularly nutrient-rich and how you can eat them: oats dalia oats are an excellent source of iron, calcium, fibre, carbohydrates and proteins. As oats are high in fibre, they can also help keep constipation at bay. The most common way to have oats is to cook it in a pan and have it with milk, nuts and dried fruit. You can add chopped fruits like bananas (kela), apples (seb) or mango (aam) to increase the nutritional value or make savoury versions like oats upma or khichdi. There are also several quick cooking varieties that you can choose from. Turmeric (haldi) turmeric contains vitamins b6 and c, fibre, potassium, magnesium and manganese. So, it is packed with essential vitamins. Not only is it a standard ingredient in indian cooking, it has been used for centuries to heal external and internal wounds. There is some evidence to suggest that turmeric helps to reduce inflammation. It may also help in healing post pregnancy wounds and cure stomach disorders, although evidence is limited to support this. You can add about half a teaspoon of turmeric to a glass of warm milk. Dry ginger powder (saunth) saunth contains fibre, vitamins b6 and e, iron, magnesium, potassium, selenium and manganese. It is a commonly available ingredient whose supposed health benefits include anti-inflammation. In north india, saunth ke ladoos are common. In south india, chutneys are made from it. You can choose to add just a little dry ginger powder to your meals. Pulses and lentils (dals) pulses are considered an essential element of a well-balanced diet. They are rich in fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals. Pulses such as moong and masoor are easy to digest and you can have them in the form of halwa or khichdi. A bonus with pulses - they help to prevent fat from collecting in your body! carom seeds (ajwain) it is traditionally believed that ajwain, a good source of thymol, not only soothes pain from gas and indigestion, but also cleanses the uterus. There is not much evidence to support this belief, but thymol is known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties. You can make a range of dishes with ajwain from paranthas to halwa, or you could simply add it to your food as an extra seasoning. Some also make it a point to drink ajwain water every day. Finger millet (mandua) finger millet, mandua or ragi is an excellent source of calcium and iron, both of which you need in plenty after giving birth. It can help you regain strength after childbirth, and is a good alternative for mums who are allergic to milk and dairy products. You can use finger millet to prepare dosas, idlis, rotis and halwas. Almonds (badaam) almonds are rich in carbohydrates, fibre, vitamin b12 and e and contain minerals like magnesium, copper, manganese, potassium, calcium and zinc. As there are so many nutrients packed into an almond, it's an ideal food to have while you recover after childbirth. Almonds can be used in many recipes such as badaam milk, sheera, halwa and so on. If you aren't in the mood to cook they make a great snack to munch on! green vegetables green vegetables are a great source of iron, which you will need to help you recuperate. Consider eating spinach (paalak), beans (frans been), lotus stem (kamal kakri), fenugreek (methi) leaves, apple gourd (tinda), pointed gourd (parwal) or other such green seasonal vegetables. Fenugreek (methi) methi seeds are a great source of iron, calcium, vitamins and minerals. They are commonly considered to help prevent back and joint pains though there is little evidence to support this. You can use them while cooking dal, vegetables, pooris or meats. Fenugreek (methi) tea is also a popular drink for breastfeeding mums. Black and white sesame seeds (til) these small, flat seeds are high in calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, and phosphorous. With all these nutrients, sesame seeds or til are good to help replenish the body of essential minerals. They are also popularly considered helpful in regulating bowel movements. In north india, til ke ladoo are popular but there are many other sweets made of til such as til patti, rewri and chikki. Whatever you choose, make sure to have a well balanced diet with all the required nutrients. It's best to run your meal plans past your doctor. And if your doctor feels you need them, she might prescribe vitamin or iron supplements.
