DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
Most probably you are suffering from a refractory type of epilepsy or your compliance to medicine is not good (i mean missing the doses of epilepsy medicine in between) or the medicine you are taking is not appropriate for your epilepsy type or not in proper doses, consult a epileptologist or atleast a neurologist in person.

My 1year old son is cp patient. His development (physical and mental) growth is very slow. He neither sit alone nor his neck stand still. I consult with a paediatric and physiotherapist and they suggest levipil and lioresal syrup and some exercise respectively. But the progress is not so satisfactory. What should I do for his better treatment? Is he be normal in his future life?

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
Dear friend, unfortunate that your son is a cp patient, but worry, he will definitely improve. Difficult to predict how much he will improve without seeing the patient status. Best thing is that he is only 1 year old. There is ample of time for his development. You started treatment in right time. Continue physiotherapy, provide adequate healthy diet. Learn all type of physical excercises, limb positioning taught by the physiotherapist, practice it daily frequently at home. Improvement will be slow, do not loose your heart, but improvement will definitely occur, how much improvement will occur that depend on your effort and patience.

The doctor told me that I have familial MONOMELIC AMYOTROPHY but none of my family member has this. Only my elder brother has same problem but not so severe. My hands have wasted and nerves can be seen. I am unable to lift anything for a long time with my left hand. One doctor advised me to take FOLVITE tablets but still there is no improvement. Can any doctor please suggest me some medicines so that I can regain my strength in my hands?

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
Monomelic amyotrophy is type of motor neuron disease. Motor neuron disease is type of degenerative neurological disorder in which the nerve cells in specific parts of body gets automatically destroyed so that muscles in the body degenerate and got wasted. In familial cases some of the family members (not all) carries a defective gene which are responsible for this spontaneous degeneration of nerve cells. Though motor neuron disease is a dangerous non treatable fatal disease, monomelic amyotrophy very fortunately a rare variant of motor neuron disease which usually does not progress after certain stage, but muscle that already damaged can not be recovered. Till date there is no specific curative therapy not available, but number of researches taking place throughout world. Probable some of them may become successful to create some hope in near future. But you get relaxed that at least your disease is not that much serious or fatal, but what damage already occurred that is not reversible, so learn to live with that disability, only thing you can do and motivate yourself.

Respected Sir, I am Sudip Goswami from West Bengal. My father suffering with Parkinson's disease from last 3 years. We had visited several hospital india including NIMHANS, AOPLLO (Chennai, Bangur (W. B) Now please suggest me the way to recover from this situation. Also suggest me the best treatment for P. D in india.

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
Dear friend, unfortunate to know your father suffering from parkinson's disease. It is a disease of brain in which brain cells in particular area of brain degenerate spontaneously so the patient develop problems in body movement like tremor, shaking of limbs and walking difficulty and movement become slow and body became stiff. There is no treatment to permanently cure the disease or stop the disease till now. But patients symptoms can be controlled by medication for a significant years. But he will be symptom free as long as he uses the medication, when he stops the medicine symptoms will reappear. Some centers doing stem cell therapy for parkinson's disease, but it is in experimental stage. Depending on patient's response to symptomatic therapy, a brain surgery is done called bds in which patient may get symptomatic relief without medication for many years. But it is available in selected centres, costly, helpful in some specific parkinson patients.

It is a type of facial palsy called bells palsy. It is good that 90% has improved in 1 month. It will improve further over time. No specific medicine is required for that. Do regular facial muscle exercise as advised by your physiotherapist. But do it repeatedly and frequently you may continue facial nerve stimulation therapy and physiotherapy for few more days.

I am suffering from epilepsy from last 15 and taking medication for the same, as I didn't had any attack since from last 3 years so I was been advised to reduce one pill i. E. Epilan immediately after reducing the pill I had an attack kindly advice what to do now?

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
If you are getting repeated seizure attack on reducing the pills, it suggests that you may need this medication for few more days. If want to reduce the dose reduce it very slowly gradually tappering of the dose of medicine. Get an eeg done to see whether it showing some epipesy activity or not. If repeat eeg shows abnormal discharges you will definitely need this medicine for more time period.

I m 34 year old my father is suffering from als. Is there any treatment available for that.

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
Till date there is no therapy or medicine to cure als. Riluzole is the only available till date which can partially delay the progression of disease for 2-3 years. Stem cell therapy is being tried in some places with partial response, but still it is in experimental stage. Some newer therapies now under trial phase. If some of these therapy become successful it will create some hope in future.

It is very very less likely a brain cancer. But more detail about your headache is required. It appears most likely migraine headache. There is specific treatment for it, which can be taken under guidance of a neurologist so that the can be completely controlled. You also need some lifestyle modification.

DM - Neurology

It is a kind of tremor disorder. Is there any other family member or blood relative having these kind of symptoms. You should check for thyroid function. A video of your hand shaking along with other detail information is required to give a full diagnosis. After that medications can be prescribed you to reduce your tremor.

Till now no specific treatment for neurofibromatosis except surgical excision of lesion if it is producing pain or any nerve compression. Some experimental medicines are there to reduce the growth, but these can not be prescribed you at this point unless their efficacy become well proven.

Greetings from Bangladesh. Six months ago my Father (age 59) started to suffer from enormous headache and eye-ache on his left side with continue tears on his left eye. We consulted with an eye specialist, did the MRI of Brain Orbit and came to know that my father had a minor brain stroke 10 months ago and there is a possibility of a brain hemorrhage. He then referred to a Neurosurgeon, who evaluate the MRI report and after a quick check up we were told not to worry, there are no brain hemorrhage and regular medication will cure the problems. But the medicine is not working properly as His left eye became completely vision less and the unbearable headache continue. My father has diabetic and high blood pressure, which are in control with insulin and regular medication. He also had a urological surgery (Nephron Spearing Surgery indicating Right Renal Moss) earlier in 2014. This continuous headache and eye-ache is killing him day by day. What we suppose to do now?

Unilateral headache with eye pain eye discharge and vision loss with a brain stroke and if all possible local eye diseases are properly ruled out by the eye specialist, then some very serious conditions like vasculitis (especially temporal arteritis) needs to be ruled out, because if it is present it can be treated at this point and eye vision can be preserved. Some other conditions like ophthalmoplegic/ retinal migraine also to be considered and can be treated if diagnosed intime.

As you are feeling weakness on right half of body with numbness, it may be related to some problem in brain or cervical spinal cord. You have to give information weather similar numbness in right side of face, if it is there you may need a brain scanning (mri brain) to rule out any serious problem.

My father is 70 years old and suffering with alzheimer's Dementia. Brain screening is done and they say that it's shrinkage to brain. So no surgery is applicable but tablets course of Nuhenz, Alzil 5/5 is going on. He was stable but nowadays it is observed that he is urinating at any time without consent at any place. What to do? It can be stopped?

DM - Neurology

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disease in which brain tissue shrink and degenerate with time and it is not treatable. Only during initial few years some symptomatic treatment may be helpful. Urine problem usually occurs gradually towards late stage of disease. It is difficult to treat. You may take terol la for some symptomatic releif of urine problem. Better take help of your neurologist.

My wife has met an accident 6 years ago. Now, she has head injury. I want remedy to general new braincells or repair old cells. She was bed ritten. What is medicine?

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Hyderabad
As she has accident 6 yr back and still bed ridden that means she had got a very severe and now permanent damage to brain cell. It is very difficult to regenerate new brain cell with any medication (ayurvedic or homeopathic or allopathic). Some centers offering stem cell therapy to regenerate new brain cell. But it is costly and still in experimental stage.
