  1. Exercising your core muscles can help you to maintain a fit spine. Your core muscles refer to the muscles of your lower back and your abdominal muscles. These muscles give support to your spine. So exercising them can give you a healthy spine.
  2. Walking regularly can also give you a healthy spine. It is suitable for people of all age groups. Daily walking can help you to recover from various spinal illnesses as well such as spinal stenosis.
  3. Swimming is also a good exercise for maintaing a fit spinal cord. Swimming helps to exercise all back muscles and thus, gives you a healthy spinal cord.

Bone loss is a silent condition that occurs over the years as you age. It is a condition when the bones become weak and fragile. Many people may not even know that that they are suffering bone loss until it leads to serious conditions such as Osteoporosis. Bone loss resulting in osteoporosis is more in women than men. It is estimated that one of every three women above 50 years suffers from osteoporosis related fracture.

What causes bone loss?
Bones are made of minerals, calcium, and phosphate. Bones are being constantly destroyed and refoemed within the body. As long as your body balances the process, your bones stay strong and healthy. However when the bone decay out grows the bone formation process, bone loss and a host of other problems occur. Some of the common causes bone loss are:

  1. With growing age, the body starts to reabsorb phosphate and calcium instead of keeping it in the bones. This makes the bones weak. When the process continues for a long time, it leads to osteoporosis.
  2. If your diet doesnot contain high calcium foods, then your bones donot get enough calcium.
  3. Smoking and drinking can make your bones weak.
  4. Medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease can cause bone loss.
  5. Sometimes medicines can also result in bone loss.

What are the symptoms of bone loss?

  1. Receding gums: Our teeth are connected to the jaw bone and if the jaw starts losing bone then it causes receding of gums. Loss of jaw bone is linked to lower bone mineral density.
  2. Decreased grip strength: Hand grips strength decreases due to low bone density.
  3. Weak and brittle fingernails: You may find your fingernails have become weak and brittle.
  4. Cramps, muscle pain, and joint ache: Pain in muscles and joints are an important indicator of vitamin D deficiency, which is a vital component for healthy bones. Cramps in legs and foot at night are an indicator of deficiency of potassium and calcium in the bones.

Dear Lybrateuser, - Your sleep duration is too less, to focus well & concentrate on your studies you can take half to one hour naps in between your schedule to make up for the deficit - have a well balanced diet with more of fruits & vegetables, whole grains, protein containing foods like milk & milk products, lentils, pulses, beans, soya products, sprouts, nuts - have plenty of oral fluids including 8-10 glasses of water for proper hydration - also have snacks in between to provide you continuous energy - also get up & walk whenever you get time so that it will give you a break & keep you alert.

Calf muscle pain is quite common issue in this kind of situation. Start calf muscle streanthening exercise. If you feel good, continue that or go for a foot x-ray. We can discuss the matter after the exercise.

After few days of surgery ambulation is very important and lying in flat position cause chest congestion keep him hydrated water with sugar and salt ,the systolic BP should not fall below 100 chest physio (that is patting slowly by palms on back of chest twice a day )spit the cough always give luke warm water.

You have not mentioned your age but if you are young, then there may be a need to meet with a counselor along with your parents to determine any contributing factors from childhood. First of all, the intensity of stress is in the perception. Change your perception, there is no stress: it’s like looking at a glass half full or half empty. Apart from that, all your emotions need to be dealt with by expression i.e. You need to talk about the feelings. Then you need to exercise regularly, eat fiber foods (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), sleep at least 8 hours every day, learn Yoga and meditation, learn stress management, and do a personality development course. Because you are into studies, follow a tight schedule, with good breaks and study habits. If group study helps you, do it with the right people. If tutoring is required, arrange for the same. These should see you through successfully without the stress. The headache is related to your anger and needs some expressions to deal with it.

I feel giddiness since one month First one to two days I felt stiffness and pain in my neck, I thought it may be cervical spondylosis but after that I never felt anything abnormal in neck portion I feel only giddiness in morning and evening time and in this situation whenever I got checked my BP it is 10 higher means 130/80 or 120/90 Please suggest me possible treatment.

Giddiness or dizziness is only symptoms .ther are may reasons .it can be associated to cervical spondylosis and also can be of BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, bppv lasts abt 40 t0 60 second .if it goes more than 60 sec than it other kind of vertigo. Proper examination is key to success. Schedule a consultation to neuro or Ent specialist. If they find it BPPV epleys maneuver will works for this.

Sleep is the best reliever of all stress and physical pain. Not only is it important to get sleep, but also to sleep soundly and without any disturbance. The quality matters. Here are a few tips to get better sleep: 

  1. It is important to maintain the same sleep schedule every single day. This helps to naturalize your body clock and get the best quality sleep. 
  2. Switch off all mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices. Their artificial glow not only hampers your eyesight, but also prolongs the amount of time your body takes to relax and fall off to sleep. 
  3. If your back pain causes you to continually wake up in the middle of the night in discomfort, then sleep with a pillow or cushion between your legs so as to straighten out your back and relieve pent up stress. 
  4. The importance of your pillow can never be stressed upon enough. Your pillow should be not too fat, hard or soft. It should just about support the natural curve of your neck, so that it is perfectly aligned with the centre of your body. Correct sleeping postures are extremely important. 
  5. Make sure your room is nice and dark so as to stimulate the secretion of a hormone called melatonin that is regulated by light exposure. Darker the room, greater melatonin, making you more sleepy. 
  6. Those who exercise regularly and well are known to be fitful sleepers. Exercise well before bedtime. If required, do some light yoga or stretching exercises that promote sleep. 
  7. What you eat throughout the day makes a difference to the quality of your sleep. Stay away from too much caffeine, alcohol, or a heavy meal just before sleeping. They only make you stay awake for longer and may cause heartburn or stomach trouble. Don't drink too much water, or else you will be making more midnight trips to the bathroom than clocking those sleep hours. 
  8. Try to keep your head clear of all worries and stress when in bed. Regular meditation and deep breathing can help. 

There is no end to all the things you can do to sleep well and comfortably. It is important to be self-disciplined to sleep well and hence be a healthy individual.

Hello doctor. I have a question regarding my mom. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis before a year. She has disc in back and neck also. Now she has pain in right shoulder and can not move her arm properly nor can do any heavy work with this arm. She faces problem during sleep also. Hello Lybrate user, sir the disk of neck might cause nerve compression which leads to improper nerve supply to the shoulder joint because of which the muscles of arm started getting less nutrition supply and started getting weak. Shoulder PAIN 1.Hot Fermentation over the painful shoulder for 10-15 min. Twice a day 2.Active shoulder movements within the painfree range. 10 reps 3.Wall press with shoulder anteriorly and sideways. 10 sec hold and 10 reps 4.Ultrasonic therapy over the painful point 5.Electrotherapy for 15-18 mins over the painful shoulder. 6.Precaution: Avoid sleeping on the affected shoulder, Avoid lifting any weight with the affected shoulder.

You should start exercising every day so that the bones and the muscle are in good condition. Go for a brisk walk everyday for 20 mins. Make it twice a day later. You can also do Yoga (pranayam and meditation included) to keep your body fit and maintain the energy levels. At the same time beware of the the food that you take. Try to eat only healthy food. Choose natural products over processed​ food, cold drinks etc. Maintain good hydration by drinking 8-10 glasses of water. Sleep well (7-8 hrs sleep) and get involved​ into something creative (any hobby which can make you feel good ). It's basically your lifestyle that will help you overcome your routine problems.
