I am having high sugar (160 - 240). I started walking and having controlled diet along with Medicine. (DYNAGLIPT-M & GLYCIPHAGE 1gm). Is it require to take these medicines lifetime. Or I can stop it once sugar is controlled. Is there any disadvantages if I stop taking medicines once sugar is controlled. Thanks

Hello, Thanks for the query. Please clarify what do you mean by saying "I am having high sugar (160 - 240). Because it does not say what is the fasting and PP level, plus no mention of HbA1c%. If you have already started Tenelegliptin and metformin, then it is good. I am sure your doctor must have already talked about how to take those drugs and how long. Drugs are just one part of the treatment. In addition regular exercise and diet control have more vital role to play. Diabetes being a Insulin hormone deficiency disease, can only be controlled by lifestyle change and appropriate drugs, there is no cure. Ideally fasting glucose should be maintained < 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8, to say that one has good control. Thanks.

How Glycemic Index Is Related To Diabetes?

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

How Glycemic Index Is Related To Diabetes?

Did you know that some carbohydrates can make your blood sugar shoot up faster than others? So, when you eat a lot of these good slower acting carbs, you can potentially control your blood sugar levels. The glycemic index is a handy tool that indicates the slow acting good carbs from the fast bad carbs.

What is glycemic index?
It is a simple number that lets you know how fast your body converts carbohydrates in your food into glucose. Two foods with the same number of carbohydrates can end up having different glycemic index numbers. The bigger the number, the higher impact it has on your blood sugar levels.

  • 55 or less is low and good for controlling sugar
  • 56-69 is mediocre
  • 70 or higher indicates a high number and is not so good

Where to Look for the glycemic index or GI?
Look for the indication on the labels of packaged food. You can also find the glycemic index for common foods on the Internet or ask your dietician for the same. Also, keep in mind that natural foods like fruits and veggies have a lower glycemic index than refined or processed foods.

Benefits of low glycemic diet
If you have diabetes, a diet with low glycemic foods can help you manage your condition better.

  • Enhance your cholesterol levels
  • Help in weight management
  • Reduce risk of heart disease
  • Help you stay full for a long time
  • Increase your energy levels
  • Controls blood sugar spikes

Carbohydrates act as an essential fuel for the body. Instead of limiting all carbs, focus on eating the healthy variants. A glycemic index is a great tool that can quickly help you to identify the good carbs from the bad ones.

Find the right balance
If a food has a high GI, does it mean you should avoid consuming it? Well, not necessarily the glycemic index should not be the prime consideration when making choices about what to eat, you should also consider other nutrients. For example, potato chips have a low GI than oatmeal. Also, the portion size of the food matters. It is good to offset a food high in GI with a food low in GI. If you take a food that has a high glycemic index during the day, be sure to balance it with a food that has a lower glycemic index in the night.

Keep in mind that when you eat a well-balanced meal full of protein, fats and carbohydrates, the digestion of the food that has a high GI slows down and shoots up the blood sugar level. So, it is important to find the right balance.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Since there is no mention of actual TSH level, it is difficult to comment. Because what you consider "normal' is not clear. Ideally TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L for being free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Thanks.

Know About Gestational Hypothyroidism!

During pregnancy, it is not uncommon for women to contract thyroid diseases like gestational hyperthyroidism and gestational hypothyroidism. The main problem, however, is that the symptoms of gestational hypothyroidism are very much similar to those which can be observed during a normal pregnancy. The difficulty in differentiating between the two is the sole reason why many pregnant women are caught unawares, eventually resulting in further complications after the first trimester.

If gestational thyroid diseases are left untreated, you and your baby may experience a ton of problems such as preeclampsia, low birth weight, miscarriage and pre-mature birth amongst others. Needless to say, if you already have a history of pre-existing hypothyroidism, then you will most certainly need more medical attention than is required.

Symptoms
Symptoms of gestational hypothyroidism, like high fatigue and excessive weight gain, are hardly distinguishable from those associated with a normal pregnancy. Other symptoms can also include:

  1. Severe constipation
  2. Goiter
  3. Muscle cramps
  4. Trouble sleeping
  5. Hair loss
  6. Dry skin
  7. Difficulty concentration
  8. Memory problems
  9. Anxiety
  10. Intolerance to cold temperatures

Causes
There may be a variety of causes that are responsible for the development of gestational hypothyroidism but the most common cause is usually an autoimmune disease known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which stimulates the body's immune system to attack thyroid gland cells, leading to a deficiency in the number of active thyroid cells and enzymes, and ultimately resulting in a shortage of the thyroid hormone.

Treatment
Treatment for gestational hypothyroidism is normally uncomplicated, and follows just two simple steps:-

  1. Proper diagnosis, via the use of a synthetic hormone called levothyroxine, which is very much similar to the hormone T4 produced by the thyroid.
  2. Continuous monitoring of thyroid function tests held every four to six weeks during pregnancy.

Diabetes is a lifestyle disease which requires a lifestyle solution and never medications. Pharmaceutical industry along with doctors have confused people that this disease requires medication what you have to remember is you need education and not medication. What you require is a complete lifestyle and dietary change. Do not use wheat- eat a low carb healthy fat, high fiber diet sleep well exercise daily you will have to take some natural supplements which will reduce blood without causing any side effects treat the root cause and not the symptoms Take a consult and reverse your diabetes naturally with lifestyle and diet and supplements and very rarely medication.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Aap ko agar thyroid gland ki kami hai, (hypothyroidism, to TSH ke level ke hisab se Levothyroxine ki goliya leni padegi. Jab koi proper treatment pe hota hai, to TSH ki level 3 to 4 mU/L is matra me rehani chahiye. At that level all symptoms are in control. To aap muze ye bataiye ke present TSH ki level kitani hai. Thyroxine (whatever dosage that you are taking) lena suru karane ke baad 6 se 8 hafte ke baad hi TSh test karavana chahiye. If you have any doubts please come back with your doubt. This is very less information. You need to tell your age, sugar level, present symptoms, weight. Did you started any medication yet or not. Just in case of your help-- start practicing exercise and walk daily for one hour. Eat no junk food. Consume less rice and sugar. Sweets and oily food should be strictly avoided.
