Zygomycosis is the broadest term used to describe infections caused by bread mold fungi of the zygomycota phylum. Zygomycosis is a rare infection that progresses slowly as a painless, subcutaneous swelling. Zygomycosis is spread by two types of species: Mucorales and entomophthorales. The mucorales cause more severe Zygomycosis than the other species. Zygomycosis affects young adults, particularly males rather than females. A single lesion or multiple satellite lesions may occur in Zygomycosis. Symptoms are:
• Uniform, movable disc shaped lump
• Subcutaneous swelling
• Hyperpigmented skin
HOW IS ZYGOMYCOSIS DIAGNOSED?
Dermatologists may examine the affected area while diagnosis. Zygomycosis is diagnosed by biopsy of the subcutaneous mass. Culture of the subcutaneous mass reveals growing fungi in the form of white to grey waxy colonies.
HOW IS ZYGOMYCOSIS TREATED?
Zygomycosis is difficult to treat. Medications are available for treating Zygomycosis. There is a strong chance of the infection recurring even after surgical treatment
