ratings and reviews)
Wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound made while breathing. Most commonly wheezing occurs during breathing out (expiration), but it can sometimes be related to breathing in (inspiration). Wheezing may be a symptom of hay fever, COPD, asthma, acute bronchitis, bronchospasm, swelling in the airways, mucus in the airways, something stuck in the throat or a growth in the airway.
HOW IS WHEEZING DIAGNOSED?
To determine the cause of wheezing, the doctor will ask questions about symptoms and what triggers them. For example, history of lung disease and you always wheeze after eating a certain food or at a certain time of year, the doctor may suspect a food or respiratory allergy. The doctor will listen to the lungs with a stethoscope to hear where the wheezing is and how much wheezing one has. The doctor may perform a breathing test (spirometry) and may also order a chest X-ray. Other blood tests and procedures may be necessary.
HOW IS WHEEZING TREATED?
Treatment for wheezing has two goals. First, airway inflammation must be controlled. Prescription anti-inflammatory medications can decrease inflammation and excess mucus in the airways. These typically come in the form of inhalers, but long-acting tablets may also be used. Syrups are used for young children. The second step is to open up your breathing tubes with quick-acting medications. Bronchodilators are often used to treat wheezing and help relieve cough.
