TETRALOGY OF FALLOT
Tetralogy of Fallot is a rare congenital heart condition that is characterized by four heart defects that defect the structure of the heart and cause poor flow of oxygen out of the heart and the rest of the body. Children and babies with this condition have blue tinged skin as their blood doesn't carry enough oxygen. Apart from that, these children have shortness of breath especially during feeding and when doing any physical activity.
HOW IS TETRALOGY OF FALLOT DIAGNOSED?
The condition is usually diagnosed during infancy or soon after. However, there are cases when the condition has not been detected till later in life. A paediatric specialist will suspect the condition if he hears a whooshing sound from your baby’s chest. An echocardiography along with electrocardiogram, chest x-ray and oxygen level measurement will be needed for definitive diagnosis.
HOW IS TETRALOGY OF FALLOT TREATED?
Surgery is the only effective treatment of Tetralogy of Fallot and the surgical options include intracardiac repair or a temporary procedure that uses a shunt.
