SURGICAL SITE INFECTION
The term Surgical Site Infection is used for defining an infection that happens on the surgical area about 24 hours post the surgery has been done. They are sometimes superficial in nature, affecting just the skin tissues in other cases they may cause internal damage. Also, these infections are characterised by fever, oozing blood or pus from the area, greenish growth around the infected area, etc.
HOW IS SURGICAL SITE INFECTION DIAGNOSED?
The surgeon uses the following tests to diagnose this condition:
• Samples of the pus may be grown in a culture to find out the types of germs that are causing the infection.
• An abscess may be seen when the surgeon reopens the wound or by special X-ray studies.
