SICKLE CELL ANEMIA
Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disease of the red blood cells (RBC). While the red blood cells are normally shaped like discs, however, with this disease, the red blood cells have an abnormal crescent shape, which in turn, makes them sticky and rigid. Symptoms of Sickle Cell Anemia usually show up at a young age and the signs include excessive fatigue, fussiness, bedwetting, jaundice, frequent infections and chest pain.
HOW IS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Sickle Cell Anemia is based on symptoms and clinical diagnostic tests. Hematologists order for blood tests that test for haemoglobin S. If the test is negative, then there is no sickle gene present. Sickle Cell Anemia can be diagnosed through prenatal diagnostics as well.
