Shaking or throwing a baby can lead to a brain injury known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. It can be a form of child abuse. Usually babies less than 1 year of age are most affected by this disorder. Such type of brain injury in babies can cause long term complications or at time prove to be fatal as well. Symptoms may vary from child to child. Sluggishness, vomiting, fussiness, loss of appetite, etc are caused in cases of mid injuries. Severe cases of this syndrome can cause signs such as seizures, reduced heartbeat, bleeding in eyes and hearing difficulty.
HOW IS SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
The pediatrics will initially do a physical examination of the baby and then recommend X-rays, MRI and CT scan. In various cases lumbar puncture & blood tests are suggested for detecting the symptoms of any other medical condition.
HOW IS SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME TREATED?
Infants or children affected by Shaken Baby Syndrome often need intensive medical treatment. Life-sustaining measures like breathing support and surgery may be required to revert damage to brain or to arrest any bleeding.
