Schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor involving Schwann cell. These tumours usually coat the nerves and in some cases externally emerge as a bony structure. These tumours grow very slowly. Some of the symptoms of Schwannoma include pain or irritation to nerve, balancing difficulty, headaches, hearing difficulty and dizziness.
HOW IS SCHWANNOMA DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Schwannoma is based on the symptoms and clinical evaluation. The oncologist may order for X-rays, MRI or ultrasound to diagnose the disease. A biopsy of the tumor may confirm diagnosis.
HOW IS SCHWANNOMA TREATED?
The best treatment options for schwannoma depends on several factors, including the size and location of the tumor, whether the tumor is benign or malignant (cancerous), and the age and overall health of the affected person. For example, standard treatment for benign schwannomas is surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. People with malignant schwannomas may also be treated with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy in addition to surgery. Because there is a chance that a schwannoma may return following surgery or treatment, regular follow-up with physical examinations and imaging should be discussed with a physician.
