Scabies is a skin infestation caused by a very tiny mite called sarcoptes scabiei. These microscopic mites live on the skin for up to 2 months. They reproduce on the skin and burrow into your skin to lay eggs. Symptoms of scabies appear after about 6 weeks. Symptoms of Scabies are:
• Tiny blisters on head, face, hands, soles of feet and other parts
• Pimple like lumps
• Widespread crusts on skin
Crusted scabies develops in people with weakened immune system
HOW IS SCABIES DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Scabies is performed by physical examination by a dermatologist. The doctor may remove a mite from the skin for biopsy and confirmation of diagnosis.
HOW IS SCABIES TREATED?
Treatment of Scabies aims at getting rid of the infestation by use of creams, ointments and lotions. The ideal time for application of these ointments is at night because that is the time mites are most active. In case of itching and other bothering symptoms, the doctor may prescribe antihistamines and antibiotics.
