More than just being a sign of serious illnesses, Persistent Cough in itself is a chronic issue. It establishes underlying causes like bronchitis, cancer, TB and other illnesses. A persistent cough is one that goes on for more than 4 weeks with milder withdrawal symptoms in between but the cough comes back with a vigour. There can also be vomiting and some blood in the mucus.
HOW IS PERSISTENT COUGH DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Persistent Cough depends on specific symptoms and a complete evaluation of medical history. Pulmonologist may order for a chest X-ray and CT scan to diagnose the cause of Persistent Cough. Lung function tests are ordered to diagnose asthma or COPD. Mucus from the throat is taken for presence of bacteria. Special scope tests are conducted in case the above tests do not yield conclusive results
HOW IS PERSISTENT COUGH TREATED?
Treatment is based on diagnosis. Antihistamines, glucocorticoids and decongestants are given as primary treatment course. Antibiotics and cough suppressants also help.
