Also known as river blindness or Robles disease, Onchocerciasis is an infection caused by parasitic worm Onchocerca volvulu.The parasite is spread by bites of a black fly. The disease tends to cause symptoms such as itching, bumps and blindness.
HOW IS ONCHOCERCIASIS DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of the condition is usually done by a dermatologist on the basis of a physical examination as well as various lab tests including blood, urine and stool. Also, the doctor will conduct a skin test using sample tissue from the lesions for proper diagnosis.
HOW IS ONCHOCERCIASIS TREATED?
Ivermectin is the drug that is used to treat the infected people and is administered every six to twelve months. The treatment kills the larva but not the adult worms. Doxycycline is given to weaken the adult worms in the body. The lumps under the skin may need a surgical removal.
