Myiasis is a medical condition in which the body of a live mammal is infested by parasites. In this disease live fly larvae (maggots) grow inside the mammal by feeding on the tissue. A specific species of flies called the myiatic flies can create an infestation at the site of the broken skin. Symptoms of Myiasis are:
• Painful, slow developing ulcers or boil like sores (Cutaneous Myiasis)
• Obstruction of nasal passages and severe irritation (nasal Myiasis)
• Facial edema and pain (Ophthalmomyiasis)
• Buzzing sound or crawling sensation in ear (Aural Myiasis)
• Discharge from wound
HOW IS MYIASIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Myiasis is tricky and is often misdiagnosed. Serologic testing is adopted for confirming diagnosis of certain forms of Myiasis. Intestinal and urinary myiasis is difficult to diagnose.
HOW IS MYIASIS TREATED?
The larvae need to be surgically removed by a medical professional. Typically, the wound is cleaned daily after the larvae are removed. Proper hygiene of wounds is very important when treating myiasis. Sometimes medication is given, depending on the type of larva that causes the problem.
