Malaria is a fairly common form of mosquito borne disease that leads to shivering, high fever, dizziness, yellow skin, seizures and if not treated on time, death too. If a female Anopheles mosquito that is infected with the relevant bacteria bites you then you are prone to getting malaria. Because there are various forms of malaria, symptoms may also be very serious and fatal depending on the type.
HOW IS MALARIA DIAGNOSED?
During a physical examination, the doctor may find an enlarged liver or enlarged spleen. Malaria blood smears taken at 6 to 12 hour intervals confirm the diagnosis.
A complete blood count (CBC) will identify anemia if it is present.
HOW IS MALARIA TREATED?
Depending on the parasite causing the infection certain medications or a medications which contain quinine would be prescribed to patients. In severe or extreme cases hospitalization could be necessary.
