LIVER DISEASE IN PREGNANCY
Liver Disease in Pregnancy are not uncommon and usually associated with preeclampsia and syndrome like elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP). The symptoms here include high blood pressure, extreme uneasiness in the stomach, throwing up even during later stages of pregnancy, poor or restricted foetal movement, etc.
HOW IS LIVER DISEASE IN PREGNANCY DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of liver disease in pregnancy is challenging and relies on laboratory investigations. The physical examination of a pregnant woman can show skin changes suggesting chronic liver disease, such as palmar erythema and spider angiomas. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)or ultrasonography may be used as a second line test if additional information is still necessary. Computed Tomography (CT) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) involve radiation to the fetus and require shielding of the uterus.
HOW IS LIVER DISEASE IN PREGNANCY TREATED?
Medications to relieve symptoms of liver disease, such as topical creams can provide relief from itching. Medications to reduce the accumulation of bile salts could be prescribed. Pregnant women with liver disease would need to be monitored.
