Liddle Syndrome is an inherited, genetic disorder that affects children. It is a form of high blood pressure or hypertension condition with usually no additional signs or symptoms. Affected individuals can also have low levels of potassium in blood, known as hypokalemia. This can cause muscle weakness, pain, fatigue, constipation and heart palpitations.
HOW IS LIDDLE SYNDROME DIAGNOSED?
The easiest way to diagnose the same would be persistent high blood pressure right through childhood along with doing tests for hyperaldosteronism.
HOW IS LIDDLE SYNDROME TREATED?
The treatment is with a low sodium (low salt) diet and a potassium-sparing diuretic that directly blocks the sodium channel. Potassium-sparing diuretics that are effective for this purpose include amiloride and triamterene. Amiloride is the only treatment option that is safe in pregnancy. Medical treatment usually corrects both the hypertension and the hypokalemia and as a result these patients may not require any potassium replacement therapy.
