Laryngitis is the inflammation of the voice box or the larynx. This can happen due to overuse of the larynx or due to an infection. The condition can be short-lived or can be chronic. In most cases, the condition is temporary, caused by a viral infection and lasts for about a couple of weeks. Symptoms include hoarseness of voice, sore throat, dry cough, dry throat and tickling sensation in your throat.

Diagnosis of laryngitis depends on symptoms and physical examination by an ear nose and throat specialist. A laryngoscopy is performed to examine the throat for lumps or swelling. If the doctor suspects a serious infection, he may order for a biopsy.
