Irregular sleep-wake rhythm is one of several circadian rhythm disorders. People with these disorders have sleep times that seem to be out of alignment. Their sleep patterns do not follow the “normal” sleep times at night. The sleep of patients with irregular sleep-wake rhythm is so disorganized that there is no clear sleep or wake pattern. Someone with irregular sleep-wake rhythm may:
• Sleep off and on in a series of naps during the day and at night
• Have no regular pattern of when they sleep and are awake
• Have a hard time sleeping well, or are very sleepy when they are awake
• Have a total sleep time that is not normal for their age
HOW IS IRREGULAR SLEEP DIAGNOSED?
A somnologist would conduct an interview with the patient asking questions pertaining to sleeping habits. A sleep diary and a device known as an actigraph would help to track sleep wake patterns and help to make a diagnosis.
HOW IS IRREGULAR SLEEP TREATED?
Treatment here includes changing lifestyle and adopting a more relaxed way of living. Exercises are highly recommended. You may be asked to meditate, have relaxing teas like chamomile tea before retiring and in some cases sleeping pills may be given. In some cases, too much of caffeine could also be the culprit and you can be asked not to have the same post afternoon.
