Histoplasmosis is a disorder caused by breathing in of spores of fungus present in bird droppings and bat droppings. These spores usually become airborne during a cleanup operation. Soil contaminated with these spores can also spread the disease. Signs and symptoms occur after a period of 3- 17 days after the fungus enters the body. Symptoms are:
• Muscle pain
• Dry cough
• Chest discomfort
HOW IS HISTOPLASMOSIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of the problem can take up to 6 weeks and common tests include blood and urine, biopsy of the tissue, lung secretion and bone marrow tests.
HOW IS HISTOPLASMOSIS TREATED?
Treatment usually isn't necessary if you have a mild case of histoplasmosis. Mild cases may resolve without treatment. Severe cases of acute histoplasmosis and all cases of chronic and disseminated disease are treated with antifungal medications, sometimes for life in those with compromised immune systems.
