HEREDITARY SPASTIC PARAPLEGIA
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia is a rare disorder affecting the nervous system, resulting in stiffness of lower limbs. This occurs due to malfunction or damage to nerves present in the lower limbs. It may affect the optic nerve and the eye’s retina causing cataract and may also cause cognitive impairment, ataxia, epilepsy and deafness. Although the symptoms of the disease are dependent on the mode of its inheritance, stiffness in lower limbs is the main and persistent symptom throughout all cases.
HOW IS HEREDITARY SPASTIC PARAPLEGIA DIAGNOSED?
Several types of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia have been identified with varying symptoms; a type affecting only lower limbs is called pure or uncomplicated whereas one with additional symptoms is known as complex or complicated.
