Hepatitis D refers to inflammation of the liver and a person can get Hepatitis D only if he/she is subjected to Hepatitis B. Hepatitis D is contagious and transmitted through exposure to the bodily fluids of an infected person such as their blood. While Hepatitis D can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), it can develop only if a person is already infected with Hepatitis B. As a matter of fact, Hepatitis D does not necessarily have symptoms but few of its symptoms include joint pain, jaundice, vomiting, dark urine, fatigue, loss of appetite and abdominal pain.
HOW IS HEPATITIS D DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Hepatitis D is done by a general physician who takes a blood or urine test. He/she would also be examining your liver for examination and thus do a scan.
HOW IS HEPATITIS D TREATED?
There are no known treatments for acute or chronic hepatitis D. Medication called interferon for up to 12 months is recommended. It is a type of protein that may stop the virus from spreading and lead to remission from the disease. A liver transplant is a major surgical operation that may be recommended as it involves removing the damaged liver and replacing it with a healthy liver from a donor.
DID YOU KNOW?
While there is no vaccine or cure for the hepatitis D virus, this virus can cause serious damage and lead to long-term liver problems such as liver cancer.
