Hemochromatosis is an inherited medical condition that causes the body to absorb too much iron from the food consumed. This excess iron that is absorbed is stored in the liver, heart and pancreas, leading to life-threatening conditions. Symptoms are:
• Joint pain
• Abdominal pain
HOW IS HEMOCHROMATOSIS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of the same includes blood tests that your general physician might prescribe. Alongside you can also be tested for genetic mutations. Common testing is done for Serum transferrin saturation and Serum ferritin.
HOW IS HEMOCHROMATOSIS TREATED?
Treatment for this problem includes blood removal, which is very similar to donating blood and some excess blood is removed from the body. In most cases, this treatment is sufficient to control the problem along with medications and therapy, which too helps in excessive iron removal.
