When the patient has undergone an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, there may be a reaction to the same which is known as GvHD or Graft versus Host Disease. This bone marrow transplant usually happens when the donor is not the same person as the patient. This condition or reaction sees the new bone marrow as a foreign body, and the attack against the same begins, thus causing an infection.

A blood test is one of the first diagnostic measures that the doctor will conduct so as to find high levels of white blood cells in the body. This usually points at the presence of an infection. A urinalysis may also be conducted for this purpose.

Treatment options here include Intravenously administered glucocorticoids that help in suppressing T-cell-mediated immune flow. Steroids may also be given for combatting the milder effects of GVHD post the transfusion for helping in reducing the risks of the same.
