Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in the eye. The most common form of glaucoma has no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults.
HOW IS GLAUCOMA DIAGNOSED?
Screening for glaucoma is usually performed as part of a standard eye examination performed by optometrists and ophthalmologists. Testing for glaucoma should include measurements of the intraocular pressure by tonometry, anterior chamber angle examination or gonioscopy, and examination of the optic nerve to look for any visible damage to it, or change in the cup-to-disc ratio and also rim appearance and vascular change. A formal visual field test should be performed. The retinal nerve fiber layer can be assessed with imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography, scanning laser polarimetry, and/or scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (Heidelberg retinal tomogram).
HOW IS GLAUCOMA TREATED?
An ophthalmology expert would provide medicines for controlling the problem through eye drops. Alongside there are also surgery options and microsurgery procedures that help in restraining the problem but they largely depend on the condition of the patient and their age.
