ratings and reviews)
Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) is a rare inherited blood clotting (coagulation) disorder characterized by the impaired function of specialized cells (platelets) that are essential for proper blood clotting. Symptoms of this disorder usually include abnormal bleeding, which may be severe. Prolonged untreated or unsuccessfully treated hemorrhaging associated with Glanzmann thrombasthenia may be life threatening. People with Glanzmann thrombasthenia may experience:
• Easy bruising
• Bleeding from gums
• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) or bleeding after childbirth
• Abnormal bleeding after surgery, circumcision, or dental work
• Rarely, vomiting blood or passing blood in urine or stool due to bleeding in the gut (gastrointestinal hemorrhage) or genito-urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra)
HOW IS GLANZMANN THROMBASTHENIA DIAGNOSED?
People affected with this condition have a normal count of platelets but have a prolonged bleeding time. The condition is diagnosed by tests that determine if there is a deficiency of the aIIbb3 (GPIIb/GPIIIa) receptor. These tests usually involve monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry.
HOW IS GLANZMANN THROMBASTHENIA TREATED?
There are no specific treatments for Glanzmann’s disease. Doctors may suggest blood transfusions, or injections of donor blood, for patients who have severe bleeding episodes. By replacing damaged platelets with normal platelets, people with Glanzmann’s disease often have less bleeding and bruising. Hormonal therapy can be used to suppress menstrual periods. Other treatment of GT is symptomatic and supportive.
