Filariasis is an infectious tropical disease caused by any one of several thread-like parasitic roundworms. The larval form of the parasite transmits the disease to humans by the bite of a mosquito. In the early stages of the infection, the patient characteristically complains of fever, chills, headaches and skin lesions. symptoms are primarily a response to adult worms that cause inflammation. HOW IS FILARIASIS DIAGNOSED?
General physician conducts a detailed physical examination and observes the swelling of lymph nodes. Confirmation of diagnosis is by examining the blood smear for presence of round worm. Blood samples obtained in the night show best results. Another diagnostic method is the detection of antibodies that are generated as a reaction to parasites.
HOW IS FILARIASIS TREATED?
Treatment for the same is done by your general physician using albendazole, which is a kind of broad-spectrum anthelmintic and is usually prescribed in combination with ivermectin. The duration usually lasts for about 8 weeks or so.
