ratings and reviews)
Filariasis is a parasitic disease which is a result of an infection caused by roundworms. Roundworms are spread by blood-feeding mosquitoes and blackflies. Filariasis belongs to a larger family of diseases called helminthiasis. Symptoms are:
• Elephantiasis – an edema with thickening of skin and underlying tissues
• Acute inflammation of lymphatic vessels
• High fever and chills
• Swollen lymph nodes
• High eosinophil count
HOW IS FILARIASIS DIAGNOSED?
The most common way to diagnose the same is done via finger prick test or gold standard that your general physician would suggest. It helps to find the microfilariae and thus determine the parasites.
HOW IS FILARIASIS TREATED?
People infected with adult worms can take a yearly dose of medicine, called diethylcarbamazine, that kills the microscopic worms circulating in the blood. While this drug does not kill all of the adult worms, it does prevent infected people from giving the disease to someone else. Surgery may be used to treat some people with filariasis who develop an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the scrotum
DID YOU KNOW?
Though not a fatal condition, if left untreated the parasites tend to multiply at a rapid pace in the stomach and thus could lead to other issues.
