Eye Discharge is a form of debris in the eye that accumulates in the corner of the eye. Eye Discharge varies from person to person and it can either be wet and sticky or dry and crusty. In most of the cases, Eye Discharge is temporary and occurs when we wake up in the morning but if it is persistent, medical attention should be taken. When a person suffers Eye Discharge, he/she occasionally notices symptoms of fever, cough, nasal congestion, and body ache, among others.
HOW IS EYE DISCHARGE DIAGNOSED?
A small amount of eye discharge is harmless and does not require any diagnostic or treatment. The ophthalmologists conduct a complete eye examination and question you about the type of discharge and frequency of occurrence. Discharge that is coloured may require further testing. A part of the conjunctiva may be scraped off to examine under a microscope.
HOW IS EYE DISCHARGE TREATED?
Treatment for the same usually includes antibiotic eye drops, which are put 2-3 times a day. Your doctor would advise you to steer clear of lenses and makeup during this time and also avoid touching the eyes. A hot and cold compress may be suggested too.
