Erysipelas is a bacterial skin infection that occurs in the upper epidermis extending up to the superficial cutaneous lymphatics. Symptoms are:
• High fever
• Shivering and chills
• Erythematous skin lesion that spreads rapidly
• Lesions with a sharp, demarcated edge
• Red, swollen and painful rash
HOW IS ERYSIPELAS DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis is purely clinical and no investigations are required. Blood culture and swabs and culture of any blister fluid may also be helpful, usually in those patients where the diagnosis of cellulitis is in doubt. X-rays, CT scan or MRI are useful if there is any concern about a foreign body.
HOW IS ERYSIPELAS TREATED?
The treatment includes the prescription of penicillin or other antibiotics. If the case is very severe, then hospitalisation may be required so that the antibiotics may be administered through an IV tube. Also, antifungal creams and medication may be prescribed for this condition.
DID YOU KNOW?
Prevention and hygiene are the best ways to curb the infection and disease from spreading. Especially, avoid scratching and picking on wounds.
