This is basically a bacterial infection in the top layer of the skin which may be caused by the Group A Streptococcus bacterium, which also causes the strep throat ailment. The symptoms include the appearance of large red patches on the skin which seem raised as well as blisters and fever along with chills and swollen glands.
HOW IS ERYSIPELAS DIAGNOSED?
Your general physician would diagnose the same through physical examinations. They would check for swelling, feel the redness and may also conduct some blood tests or skin tests. Antibiotics like penicillin are provided to the patient. In cases where the entire tissue dies, surgery may be imperative.
HOW IS ERYSIPELAS TREATED?
Antibiotics are used to get rid of the infection. If the infection is severe, antibiotics may need to be given through an IV (intravenous line). People who have repeated episodes of erysipelas may need long-term antibiotics. Surgery is only required in rare cases of erysipelas that have progressed rapidly and caused healthy tissue to die. A surgical operation may be needed to cut away the dead tissue.
DID YOU KNOW?
Prevention and hygiene are the best ways to curb the infection and disease from spreading. Especially, avoid scratching and picking on wounds.
