Empyema Thoracis or pleural-thoracic empyema is a life threatening condition that requires emergency treatment. In Empyema Thoracis, the purulent is infected causing unilateral pleural collection. Usually pneumonia, sub-diaphragmatic abscess are the cause of Empyema Thoracis. Symptoms are:
• Shortness of breath
• Increase in white blood cell count
• Chest pain
• Dehydration and coughing up of blood and greenish-brown sputum in severe cases
HOW IS EMPYEMA THORACIS DIAGNOSED?
Your general physician will suspect this condition if you have had pneumonia and are not responding to treatment given to reduce your symptoms. Chest x-rays, scans and ultrasounds will help in the diagnosis. Blood tests are also performed to check the white blood count and ascertain the infection.
HOW IS EMPYEMA THORACIS TREATED?
Treatment involves draining the pus by inserting a needle in the pleural space, a process called thoracentesis. This is done in initial stages. In later stages, drainage tubes may have to be inserted through a process known as thoracic surgery.
