This condition happens due to a lymphatic obstruction which can cause severe inflammation in the legs as well as the groin area. This is due to an infection spread by the bite of a parasitic mosquito. The symptoms include blocked lymph ducts, severe swelling in the legs, thick skin tissue and impaired lymphatic drainage.
HOW IS ELEPHANTIASIS DIAGNOSED?
A diagnosis of elephantiasis is made based upon a thorough clinical evaluation, a detailed patient history and identification of characteristic symptoms. A variety of tests may be used to determine the underlying cause of lymphatic damage and subsequent elephantiasis. The standard test for detecting the infection is microscopic examination of a blood smear for presence of the microfilariae.
HOW IS ELEPHANTIASIS TREATED?
Treatment for Elephantiasis depends on the underlying cause. Lymphatic filariasis is treated using diethylcarbamazine. In severe cases where medical treatment fails, surgery may be needed for reconstructing the affected body parts
