Dysentery is a painful intestinal infection that is usually caused by bacteria or parasites. Dysentery is defined as diarrhea in which there is blood, pus, and mucous, usually accompanied by abdominal pain. Other symptoms of dysentery include cramps, bloating, and fever, along with 3-8 soft or liquid stools a day. It is caused by a number of types of infection such as bacteria, viruses, parasitic worms, or protozoa.
HOW IS DYSENTERY DIAGNOSED?
If a doctor suspects dysentery, a stool sample usually will be required for analysis. For bacterial infections such as shigella, the diagnosis is made by culture of the stool. An antibody blood test helps to confirm the diagnosis of amoebic dysentery or liver abscess.
HOW IS DYSENTERY TREATED?
Treatment for dysentery includes providing the patient with ample liquid solutions that are laden with glucose, including ORS for kids. Along with apt hydration a BRAT diet, which includes barley, rice, applesauce and toast. Medications to ease fever, pain and control the motions are also provided.
