Difficulty swallowing or dysphagia is a condition that is usually an indication of a throat problem or a problem with the oesophagus. There can be various problems that can cause difficulty in swallowing. Some of these problems can be minor and temporary while there can be other major, serious issues as well. Typically, if you have a problem with swallowing once in awhile, it is nothing serious and not even a medical concern but if it happens regularly, it should be a matter of concern. X-rays and fluoroscopy are used to diagnose the condition. Other tests include esophagoscopy, laryngoscopy, manometry and pH monitoring.
HOW IS DIFFICULTY SWALLOWING TREATED?
Exercises are recommended if the problem is due to brain not functioning properly. Changing your diet, dilation, endoscopy and a surgery may be the treatment options. If the dysphagia is related to GERD, prescription drugs can be helpful.
