Diarrhoea is a condition marked by passage of frequent, loose and watery stools. Common causes of diarrhoea are food poisoning, water contamination or contact with a person who has diarrhoea. Virus enters the gut through these sources, resulting in diarrhoea. Acute diarrhoea occurs suddenly and lasts for 2-3 days. Chronic diarrhoea lasts for more than 2 weeks and is caused by an underlying medical condition. Symptoms are:
• Urgency in passing stools
• Thin or watery stools
• Nausea or vomiting
• Bloating of belly
• Blood or mucus in stools
• Abdominal cramps
HOW IS DIARRHOEA DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis will usually be done by a general physician who will take blood, stool and urine samples to put them through lab tests that will point at the cause of the condition. In severe cases, the doctor may also conduct an ultrasound and other imaging tests in case the loose motions are a side effect of an even more serious ailment.
HOW IS DIARRHOEA TREATED?
Acute diarrhoea does not require any treatment, it usually subsides on its own. Intake of fluids should be increased for compensating for the loss of fluids. If the stool examination reveals food intolerance, specific foods must be avoided. Chronic diarrhoea is treated by addressing the underlying cause.
