Dermatophytosis, commonly known as ringworm, is a fungal infection of the skin in humans, pets and domesticated animals. The name ringworm is a misnomer, since the infection is not caused by a worm. Initial symptoms are appearance of red patches on the skin on the scalp, groin, feet and other areas. Other symptoms are:
• Patches on skin that develop blisters or begin to ooze
• Red patches that resemble a ring
• Patches with defined and raised edges
HOW IS DERMATOPHYTOSIS DIAGNOSED?
Your doctor will diagnose ringworm by examining your skin and possibly using a black light to view your skin in the affected area. The fungus will fluoresce (glow) under black light. If you're infected, the areas of the skin where the fungus is located will glow. Your doctor may confirm a suspected diagnosis of ringworm by requesting certain tests: 1.If you're getting a skin biopsy, your doctor will take a sample of your skin or discharge from a blister and will send it to a lab to test it for the presence of the fungus. 2. If you're getting a KOH exam, your doctor will scrape off a small area of infected skin and place it in potassium hydroxide (KOH). The KOH destroys normal cells and leaves the fungal cells untouched, so they are easy to see under a microscope.
HOW IS DERMATOPHYTOSIS TREATED?
Home care is important along with medications. To avoid spread of the infection, the infected person’s clothes and bedding should be washed daily. The affected area should be cleaned regularly and Ketoconazole ointment or any other prescribed medicated cream must be applied.
