A buildup of dental plaque which becomes hardened is known as dental calculus. This is different from plaque in the sense that plaque is softer while the calculus is like a hard layer which seems like a growth in itself. The common cause of this build up includes the accumulation of minerals from the saliva and gingival crevicular fluid in the form of plaque build up on the teeth.
HOW IS DENTAL CALCULUS DIAGNOSED?
A routine dental check up can easily identify the plaque formation and the doctor can advise on how it can be treated to prevent the formation of calculus.
HOW IS DENTAL CALCULUS TREATED?
The treatment for dental calculus involved good dental hygiene in daily routine. Brushing regularly for 30 seconds with soft bristles is advised. One must avoid smoking as it affects the gums and teeth greatly. Regular clean-up of teeth by the dentist is suggested to avoid such problems. The process for removing tartar is called scaling. During a scaling, the dentist or dental hygienist uses special instruments (ultrasonic and hand scalers, and curettes) to remove tartar and plaque from your teeth, above and below the gum line.
