Cirrhotic Ascites is a condition that is basically due to the presence of liver cirrhosis in a patient. The condition is basically accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. This condition is an indication that the liver damage or failure in imminent and calls for immediate action to arrange for liver transplantation. People who get Cirrhotic Ascites experience rapid weight gain, abdominal pain and fluid accumulation in the chest among others.
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES DIAGNOSED?
Cirrhotic Ascites may be diagnosed by the doctor on physical examination but is usually confirmed by tests such as ultrasound or CT scan of the abdomen. In the majority of patients, the doctor will recommend that a small needle is inserted through the abdominal wall to remove fluid to be examined in the laboratory which is called Paracentesis test.
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES TREATED?
A general physician treats cirrhotic ascites based on the underlying cause. Peritoneal carcinomatosis or malignant ascites may be treated by surgical resection of cancer and chemotherapy. Because cirrhosis of the liver is the main cause of ascites, it will be the main focus of this section.
