Cirrhosis of the liver is the most common cause of ascites but other conditions such as heart failure, kidney failure, infection or cancer can also cause ascites. Ascites is caused by a combination of pressure in the veins running through the liver and a decrease in liver function caused by scarring of the liver, i.e., cirrhosis. Ascites is an excessive fluid that accumulates in the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity. It is a complication of cirrhosis and appears as an abdominal bulge
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis for this ailment will be conducted by a Gastroenterologist who will typically carry out blood tests to study the blood cell count as well as the liver functioning. Also, paracentesis may be carried out to collect and study the sample fluid which will help in ascertaining the cause of the ailment for further treatment.
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES TREATED?
A general physician treats cirrhotic ascites based on the underlying cause. Peritoneal carcinomatosis or malignant ascites may be treated by surgical resection of cancer and chemotherapy. Because cirrhosis of the liver is the main cause of ascites, it will be the main focus of this section.
