Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. It is cirrhotic in people with cirrhosis. The symptoms are:
1. Abdominal pain and discomfort
3. Shortness of breath
4. A cosmetically diffusing large belly
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis of ascites is based on a physical examination in conjunction with a detailed medical history to ascertain the possible underlying causes since ascites is often considered a nonspecific symptom for other diseases. If ascites fluid is greater than 500ml, it can be demonstrated by bulging glanks and fluid waves performed by the doctor examining the abdomen. Smaller amounts of fluid may be detected by an ultrasound of the abdomen. A CT scan is also done to evaluate other conditions. CBC is also done
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES TREATED?
The survival rate is very low for people who develop Cirrhotic Ascites. Liver transplantation is essential in this stage.
DID YOU KNOW?
As mentioned above, patients with Cirrhotic Ascites are at an increased risk and may not survive 3 to 3 years without a liver transplant.
