Cirrhotic Ascites is a medical condition in which there is fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity due to cirrhosis. It is the most common complication of cirrhosis. People with alcoholic cirrhosis are more likely to develop Cirrhotic Ascites during early course of liver disease. Symptoms are abdominal fullness or heaviness, early satiety, shortness of breath and abdominal pain.
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES DIAGNOSED?
Cirrhotic Ascites is due to cirrhosis; hence, diagnosis is usually the same as that done for cirrhosis. Gastroenterologists first confirm diagnosis of cirrhosis. He or she may order for specialized imaging tests to detect the extent of fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. The colour and appearance of the ascites fluid is key to detecting the cause of ascites.
HOW IS CIRRHOTIC ASCITES TREATED?
The treatment of ascites largely depends on the underlying cause. The treatment focuses on diet, medication, therapeutic paracentesis and surgery. Liver transplantation for advanced cirrhosis may be considered a treatment for ascites due to liver failure.
